Medical Coding (MDCD1-CE)

Health information management (HIM) is a diverse profession that incorporates medicine, management, finance, information technology, and regulation and compliance. Medical terminology is the language of medicine that describes the human body and associated components, conditions, and processes. This course illustrates the importance of HIM professionals in various settings and helps you to prepare to code accurately and effectively using the ICD-10-CM/PCS code set with a complete understanding of relevant medical terminology.

The <em>Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) Exam Preparatory</em> course prepares candidates for the AHIMA Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) credential exam, which demonstrates medical coding proficiency. This course is divided into modules based on the seven AHIMA coding domains&mdash;explicit sets of competencies on which the certification exam is based. Each module provides a comprehensive review of one specific domain, including coding of inpatient and outpatient hospital records, clinical documentation, reimbursement methodologies, data quality, regulatory issues, and compliance. This course also includes test-taking strategies, critical-thinking exercises, and multiple-choice and case study scenario questions to improve and strengthen the coding knowledge, proficiency, and skill set necessary to pass the CCS exam.

This course has been developed and is taught in conjunction with experienced medical professionals in the industry who have experience as hiring managers. It is offered in-person, providing you with one-on-one mock interview experience. <p><em>Medical Coding Hands-on Experience</em> is designed for medical coding graduates. This course will provide 30 live coding hours for each student. In addition to live coding hours, students will participate in regularly scheduled didactic sessions to apply overarching coding theories to their practical experiences. Students also will receive direct feedback from the HIM director to ensure clear understanding of coding practices, theories, and principles. The purpose of this course is to gain more practical coding experience in a clinical environment and to prepare further for CPC or CCS certification exams. Students will receive one-on-one training and will be supervised by the HIM director at their designated medical facility.</p><br><br><br><br><p>According to AAPC and AHIMA (two certification bodies that administer the coding certification exams), medical coders must have experience in the field for one to two years before sitting for their exams. As a response to this requirement, NYUSPS is offering this course along with <a href="https://www.sps.nyu.edu/professional-pathways/courses/mdcd1-ce9009" target="_blank"><em>Medical Coding Practicum</em></a> to help jump-start this process.</p>
