Anesthesiology (ANES-MD)

The medical student will gain a broad understanding of acute and chronic pain from the neurophysiological, musculoskeletal, systemic disease, and biopsychosocial perspectives.

This is an advanced 4-week elective that seeks to build on anesthesiology knowledge and experiences gained in the pre-clerkship and clerkship years. It may be used to build upon experience from the 2-week Anesthesiology Introductory Elective.

This is an introductory 2-week elective that seeks to introduce the student to the field of Anesthesiology. As an introductory elective, the student will be expected to gain a broad understanding of the core principles, foundational knowledge, and essential skills relevant to the specialty through encounters with a diverse range of cases reflective of this specialty. Students will gain this experience through an introduction to student preoperative evaluation, intraoperative management and postoperative routine and critical care. Emphasis is placed on scientific foundations of anesthesia, including organ-system pathophysiology, autonomic and anesthetic pharmacology, and hemodynamic monitoring. Morning case conferences and afternoon topical lectures will supplement operating room patient care responsibilities. In the operating room, there is a one-to-one teaching by both anesthesia residents and faculty. The student may elect to do a one-week rotation in a specialty field of anesthesia, e.g., obstetrics, neurosurgery, cardiothoracic or pediatrics. On-call responsibilities at Bellevue Hospital are elective and will be one evening per week during which time the student will work with the Bellevue Team Captain.
