Brazil has the second-largest economy in the Americas and shares a border with nine countries. Come expand your own borders in this course, appropriate for beginners as well as those with basic knowledge of Portuguese. Fundamental language patterns and daily vocabulary of Brazilian Portuguese are introduced. The course focuses on all four core skill areas (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) while emphasizing pronunciation and grammar. Practice present, past, and future tenses in a variety of contexts, ranging from informal conversations to formal dialogues. Learn the indefinite and definite articles, prepositions, and basic sentence structures. Become more familiar with topics in Brazilian culture related to food, ways of life, and customs. Enhance your conversational abilities, and hone practical skills, like how to order in restaurants, make purchases, and understand travel information. Throughout the course, you&rsquo;ll build vocabulary on a wide range of topics, including family, work, and leisure, while strengthening your grammar. Focus on expanding your vocabulary, mastering more complex grammatical structures, and holding simple conversations. This fast-paced course condenses the material covered in two levels into the time it normally takes to complete one. Homework assignments are an important part of the curriculum. Classes are conducted in Portuguese.

This course is designed for high-beginner to intermediate learners of Portuguese who seek the language skills to facilitate professional communication with speakers of Brazilian Portuguese. Emphasis is on developing strong communication skills, expanding vocabulary, and improving grammatical accuracy. In 51 hours of classroom instruction and six hours of guided field trips, expand your vocabulary, enrich your grammatical resources, and develop your conversational skills. Practice the language, sample the food, and experience the culture through visits to Portuguese-speaking neighborhoods in New York City.

Through a variety of paired, small-group, and whole-class activities that rely on interaction and participation, you&rsquo;ll increase your fluency in the Portuguese language and your knowledge of Brazilian culture. In this dynamic and interactive course, gain the language skills to engage in conversations, discussions, and to communicate with greater ease in Brazilian Portuguese. <p>In this interactive intermediate-level course, hone your speaking, listening, and writing skills in Brazilian Portuguese. Gain exposure to the Brazilian language and culture by watching a selection of movies dating from 1993 to 2003, such as <i>Central Station</i>, all of which touch upon major themes in Brazilian society. Then, engage in discussions of the films and participate in exercises and activities that help deepen your understanding of the movies&rsquo; themes. Classes provide ample opportunities for strengthening your speaking skills and expanding your vocabulary and range of grammatical expression. This course is appropriate for students who have completed Level VI in this department or who have reached the intermediate-mid level on the ACTFL proficiency scale.</p>
