NEURO-MD 4004 Child Neurology Advanced (4 Credits)
Typically offered Fall and Spring
This is an advanced 4-week elective that seeks to build on prior general pediatric and neurologic knowledge and experiences gained earlier in training. It may be used to build upon experience spent previously on child neurology, as the depth and scope will be commensurate with level. As an advanced elective, students are expected to either function at or develop to the level of a sub-intern. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the core principles of neuroscience, foundational clinical knowledge, and essential technical and examination skills relevant to the specialty through encounters with a diverse range of cases reflective of this specialty across multiple dynamic sites serving a full spectrum of demographics and pathophysiology. Students will gain this experience through directly observed histories and physical examinations, will be taught skills of localization and pathophysiologic mechanisms, and learn how to triage and prioritize differential diagnoses both by probability and urgency / severity.
Grading: SOM Graded
Repeatable for additional credit: No
NEURO-MD 4006 Epilepsy Clinical (4 Credits)
Typically offered Fall and Spring
Medical students will work with the clinical epilepsy/neurophysiology service at the NYU Comprehensive Epilepsy Center. Opens in a new tab. Activities will include attendance of video-EEG rounds during which students will be introduced to the basics of electroencephalography interpretation and will review video-EEG recorded seizures with the attending and team; participation in epilepsy monitoring unit walk rounds and discussion of patient clinical care; participation in admitting patients to the epilepsy monitoring unit and presenting cases on rounds; observation of intraoperative mapping of seizure foci; observation of both intraoperative and bedside brain stimulation for the mapping of language and motor function; and observation of intracarotid sodium amytal testing (the Wada test) which is used to determine dominance of language and memory functions. Wada tests, intraoperative procedures, and bedside mapping procedures occur sporadically through the week (Monday through Friday), thus exposure to these procedures will vary. Their observation is encouraged and will be offered as procedures available throughout the week.

NEURO-MD 4014 Neurocritical Care (2 Credits)
Typically offered Fall and Spring
On the elective you will learn about the acute management of a multitude of neurologic emergencies, including traumatic brain injury, subarachnoid hemorrhage, intracerebral hemorrhage, status epilepticus, neuromuscular diseases, and more. You will learn about the interplay between neurologic diseases and other organ systems, and the hemodynamic and airway management of neurologically decompensating patients. You will see patients both in the neuroscience ICU as well as in the other ICUs.
Grading: SOM Graded
Repeatable for additional credit: No
NEURO-MD 4015 Neurology Advanced (4 Credits)
Typically offered Fall and Spring
This is an advanced 4-week elective that seeks to build on neurologic knowledge and experiences gained in the pre-clerkship and clerkship years. It may be used to build upon experience from the 2-week Neurology Introductory Elective. As an advanced elective, students will be expected to serve at the level of a sub-intern. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the core principles, foundational knowledge, and essential skills relevant to the specialty through encounters with a diverse range of cases reflective of this specialty. Students will gain this experience rotating on the inpatient and consultation stroke, neurology ward, or ICU services at NYU Tisch, NYU Brooklyn, and Bellevue Hospitals. Students will have a primary assignment on an inpatient unit. They will also have an opportunity, if requested, to attend a week of a subspeciality clinic such as: General Neurology, Neuromuscular Disease, Movement Disorders, Multiple Sclerosis, Headache, Pediatric Neurology, Neuro-Oncology, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Epilepsy, and Cognitive Neurology. The emphasis of this elective is on neurological localization, diagnosis, and management in preparation for a neurology residency.
Grading: SOM Graded
Repeatable for additional credit: Yes
NEURO-MD 4016 Neurology Introductory (2 Credits)
Typically offered Fall and Spring
This is an introductory 2-week elective that seeks to introduce the student to the field of Neurology. As an introductory elective, the student will be expected to gain a broad understanding of the core principles, foundational knowledge, and essential skills relevant to the specialty through encounters with a diverse range of cases reflective of this specialty. Students will gain this experience rotating on the inpatient and consultation stroke, neurology ward and consult, and critical care services at NYU Tisch, NYU Brooklyn, and Bellevue Hospitals. Additionally, the student has the option to spend either the entire rotation or one week of the rotation in a subspecialty clinic such as: General Neurology, Neuromuscular Disease, Movement Disorders, Multiple Sclerosis, Headache, Pediatric Neurology, Neuro-Oncology, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Epilepsy, and Cognitive Neurology. The emphasis of this elective is on neurological localization, diagnosis and management.
