This course explores theory, policy, and practice of bilingual and multilingual experiences and education models in the U.S. and global contexts. Emphasis is on intersections of language and other identities (race, class, gender, etc), and systems of power and privilege. Topics include home language support, language/literacy teaching for developmentally and linguistically diverse students, and the various roles and responsibilities of educators and professionals working with multilingual communities.

This course explores theory, policy, and practice at the intersection of bilingualism and exceptionality. Topics include sociocultural and biolinguistic influences on multilingual exceptional children, special education legislation, global perspectives of exceptionality, school-family collaboration, bilingual inclusion program models, assessment practices, and modes of classification, identification, and intervention strategies.

This course focuses on methods of teaching English and native language arts and literacy to multilingual learners. Topics include connecting research-based methods to instructional strategies; examining the role of cultural, linguistic and individual factors in the development of biliteracy; and investigating how bilingual students use their home language skills to develop and acquire English literacy.

This course explores the connection between language teaching observation and reflective practice. Students observe language teaching in 30+ hours of fieldwork in a variety of local educational settings. Students connect field observations to seminar discussions, presentations, and reports.

This course is designed by the student and sponsoring faculty to investigate an area or field of specialization not normally offered in scheduled course offerings. It is an opportunity to work one-on-one with a faculty member to engage in fieldwork/internship, research, curriculum development, or another independent project. Students must consult with the advisors and faculty before undertaking independent study.

This course includes supervised student teaching in a bilingual education classroom in elementary or secondary settings, for a minimum of 180 hours (minimum of 20 days), plus a weekly seminar. Student teaching experiences support theoretical and practical applications of planning and implementation of various curricula. Other seminar topics include working with families, legislation, identification of student needs, differentiating instruction, and assessment.
