Based on three pillars of experiential learning--exploration, collaboration, & engagement--this course introduces students to pathways of academic, personal & professional achievement. The course includes three main components: self-assessment, understanding mentorship, & understanding leadership. Students will conduct individual & group self-assessments & interest inventories; identify & cultivate mentoring relationships in their field of study; & examine & practice leadership in both traditional & non-traditional modes. Course includes high-profile guest speakers, a high level of student involvement in constructing learning activities, & experiential learning trips to complement the on-campus experience.

HPSE-UE 1011  Meaning-Making in College: The Impact of Higher Education  (2 Credits)

Who are you socially? Morally? Politically? Are you more than a SAT score? This course focuses on the role of student development theory & its use in helping students examine how they change as a result of college-going. Specifically students will be able to construct a theoretical framework for understanding their epistemic orientations, their identity patterns, and how each informs their social relationships. Recitations will enable students to analyze how and why development occurs with specific educational contexts.

HPSE-UE 1012  Ubuntu: Collective Consciousness in Everyday Life  (4 Credits)  
Introduces students to the African philosophy of Ubuntu, which priorities shared humanity and collective consciousness across public and private life. Students define and analyze Ubuntu in the context of South Africa and the US, and examine individualism and collectivism, forgiveness and reconciliation and their implications for nation-building. Students experiment with concepts of Ubuntu in collaboration with students in South Africa and apply these concepts to contemporary social problems. Meets Steinhardt Core requirements for Texts & Ideas.
