In this course students study and gain experience in music and music education research methodologies and music reference procedures. Emphasis is placed on using qualitative research methodologies and resources toward conducting small, real-world research projects, reporting them in class, and creating research papers and/or topic proposals for MA theses and PhD dissertations.

This course analyzes a wide range of published research on relationships between music education and (1) behaviorism, (2) cognitive development theory, (3) constructivism, (4) humanism, (5) human consciousness studies, (6) self-identity formation, (7) motivation theory, and (8) tests of musical intelligence and achievement. Music education contributes importantly to this dialectical exchange among competing and complementary theories.

Students participate in a variety of activities and assignments to help them create and enact their own curriculum, lessons and activities in the space of a 21st century secondary music classroom. Students gain practical experience in learning and teaching contemporary popular music instrumentation including guitar, electric guitar, electric bass, ukulele, drum-kit, keyboard, and other electronic instruments.

This teacher education course provides training to meet the needs of a wide spectrum of exceptional learners, all grade levels, in inclusive and special education school music settings. Course covers a study of laws, due process, trends, and events in special education, current co-teaching and collaborative practices, field work observations, assessment and evaluation techniques, research advances, and design of standards-based adaptive lessons for differentiating instruction to meet grade level expectations for all learners.

First semester students research topics in music education, create an annotated bibliography, complete human subjects ethics training, and prepare a capstone project proposal.
