Music Instrumental: Strings (MPASS-GE)

Open to departmental graduate students majoring in music. Private lessons covering string repertoire in all styles and forms, supplemented by outside assignments. Jury examination at end of semester required.

A mind body method for becoming aware of and changing movement habits. Focus is on recognizing and learning how to release excess tension and change those habits of movement that interfere with the free and centered use of the body. This leads to the development of a physical understanding of oneself through movements.

This course will provide musicians with an opportunity to physically embody music through the form of Baroque dance. Basic Baroque dance steps, phrases & ornamentations, will be learned & examined through the historic relationship between the two art forms of music & dance. An exploration of the Beauchamp-Feuillet notation system will then be applied to their own reconstructions & their performances throughout the semester.

Designed primarily for Master's candidates in music performance and/or composition. Synthesis for learning based on performance. Recital and a Master's final written project are required.

The emphasis in this class in on the student performance & analysis of string music. Students prepare & perform literature from the 17th to the 21st century for Artist Teachers who offer insights into technical & interpretive topics including phrase shaping, expressive timing, ornamentation, & extended techniques.

A performance class geared towards students who are taking auditions. Included in the class are two recording sessions to make pre-screen recordings. Readings will include studies on proper breathing & stage presence. The class includes mock audition sessions.

Instrumental Performance juries assess each student’s growth in instrumental techniques including intonation, rhythm, tone production, articulation, dynamics, and musicality. Juries take place at a designated time at the end of the semester and are evaluated by each student’s program director and any additional invited faculty. Jury repertoire is selected in conversation with each student’s private teacher, and each student studies their jury repertoire in their private lessons.

Studies will include how to teach various technical concepts, working with various fingerings & bowings & the correct progression of repertoire. The emphasis will be on understanding how students learn mentally & physically.

This course is a culmination of a student’s graduate degree. It requires the student to incorporate elements from their entire course of study to research, program, prepare, and present a successful degree recital.

It should be noted that independent study requires a minimum of 45 hours of work per point. Independent study cannot be applied to the established professional education sequence in teaching curricula. Each departmental program has established its own maximum credit allowance for independent study. This information may be obtained from a student?s department. Prior to registering for independent study, each student should obtain an Independent Study Approval Form from the adviser.

The seminar provides additional orientation and guidance to the school, the university, and the city, explores professional issues, and provides opportunities for students to enhance their writing, discussion, and presentation skills for the American classroom.
