Whether it&rsquo;s two hit men arguing over the definition of a cheeseburger in <em>Pulp Fiction</em> or a man and women debating whether it&rsquo;s possible to just be friends in <em>When Harry Met Sally, </em>witty dialogue has the power to make characters come alive and turn a film into a classic. In this workshop, develop strategies for writing great dialogue. Study classic films and discuss what makes dialogue authentic then write and workshop original scenes of your own, focusing on crafting your own classic lines.

Through a variety of paired, small-group, and whole-class activities that rely on interaction and participation, you&rsquo;ll increase your fluency in the Japanese language and your knowledge of Japanese culture. The course book, <I>Doraemon no Dokodemo Nihongo</I>, serves as the spine of the course, and is fleshed out with examples of anime and manga that participants bring to class. Reading, writing, speaking, and listening are developed in this course.

Reading and writing focus on reviewing all 46 characters of the Hiragana alphabet and introducing all 46 characters of the Katakana alphabet. If you have completed <em>Japanese IV</em> or the equivalent, this course will help you to consolidate your understanding of the syntactical structure that you have already learned, with an emphasis on talking about topics relevant to daily Japanese life. This course is divided into two units. The first unit deals with verbal skills necessary for planning and carrying out activities in cooperation with others, including expressing probability and indicating desire. The second unit focuses on forming conditional clauses. Topics covered include preparing for earthquakes or other disasters, discussing dreams for the future, solving problems, helping someone who is lost, giving instructions, and explaining steps for doing something. On completion of this course, you will have mastered reading and writing for all 160 kanji characters that are introduced in <em>Japanese for Busy People II.</em>

This course offers a solid introduction to the Japanese language.
