This immersive, fast-paced learning program is designed to consolidate prior language acquisition and advance your Italian to a whole new level of proficiency. The emphasis on culture-based topics and conversation enhances the learning process, so that greater fluency is attained in a shorter period of time.

Are you traveling abroad for work or study? Whether you are spending a semester in Florence or going to Milan on business, gain the cultural competency and language skills to successfully navigate your new surroundings. This bootcamp series provides an intensive language and cultural experience to prepare you for a wide range of challenges, from professional to academic, formal to informal. Prior exposure to the language is recommended (but not required), as instruction is intense and fast paced, covering beginner to intermediate material. Classes focus on developing written and spoken language proficiency and preparing you for new social customs and practices, while you explore the region’s culture through visits to museums and restaurants. Immerse yourself in a language and learn the skills to succeed in new academic or work settings in just three weeks.

<p> This abbreviated introductory course is for beginners with little or no prior knowledge of Italian. Everyday expressions are introduced and immediately put to use in class through role-play situations and dynamic interactive drills. Everyone is expected to be an active participant, and individual needs are addressed. In five sessions, acquire knowledge of the fundamentals of the language that will allow you to achieve a minimum level of proficiency for basic communication. </p>

This introductory short course is for beginners with no or little prior knowledge of Italian. Everyday expressions are introduced and immediately put to use in class through role-play situations and dynamic, interactive drills. Students are expected to be active participants, and individual needs are addressed. In three Saturdays, acquire knowledge of the fundamentals of the language, allowing a primary level of proficiency for basic communication.

This course focuses on the pronunciation, vocabulary, useful expressions, and grammatical structures that allow for effective communication in Italian. Through a variety of paired, small-group, and whole-class activities that rely on interaction and participation, you&rsquo;ll build your vocabulary and fluency in the Italian language and your knowledge of Italian culture. Taught in Italian to the extent possible, this course is targeted to individual learners&rsquo; skill levels and interests. With this dynamic and interactive instruction, gain the language skills to engage in conversations and develop listening skills in Italian. This course focuses on strengthening the use of the present tense in daily life situations. Through a variety of paired, small-group, and whole-class activities that rely on interaction and participation, you will build your vocabulary and fluency on the Italian Language and your &ldquo;how-to&rdquo; when in Italy. Taught in Italian to the extent possible, this course is targeted to individual learners who want to improve their communication skills. With this dynamic and interactive instruction, you will become more comfortable in conversations and familiar with daily vocabulary such as when at the restaurant, at the supermarket, at the hotel etc. Activities provide greater opportunities to expand the range of your conversational ability. This course is best suited for learners who feels secure with the structure and use of the present tense and they need a little push to loosen up when speaking. Registering at least two weeks prior to the course start date is highly recommended.

This course is for students who have completed <i>Italian IV</i>, or for those who are familiar with all tenses and basic structures and vocabulary. The course focuses on strengthening speaking and listening skills while acquiring new vocabulary and idiomatic Italian. In class, discuss contemporary topics from the Internet and from print publications and write expos&eacute;s. This is an interactive class conducted entirely in Italian.

<p class="MsoPlainText" style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><span style="mso-no-proof: yes">This course is for students who are familiar with most aspects of Italian grammar and want to utilize more complex grammatical structures when speaking and writing. Expand vocabulary and bolster your spoken Italian skills in everyday communicative situations. The class is taught entirely in Italian so that you may improve your proficiency through exposure to the language being spoken at a native level and speed in a small group setting. Read newspaper articles and web pages in order to develop stronger reading skills. Work on your writing skills through assigned compositions and essays. Expand your vocabulary and learn to express doubts, emotions, and opinions about music, relationships, the environment, social issues, and technology. Express hypotheses, discuss various aspects of Italian lifestyle, and compare cultures. Recognize and understand the use of passato remoto, past conditional, and all aspects of the subjunctive mood. By the end of the course, you will have achieved an advanced-low level of proficiency on the ACTFL scale.<!--?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /--><o:p></o:p></span></p>

Italian I and II

This course offers a solid introduction to the Italian language. In 51 hours of classroom instruction and six hours of guided field trips, learn the basic vocabulary and grammar and engage in elementary conversation. Through visits to Italian communities in New York City, practice the language, sample the cuisine, and experience the culture. This course is an excellent introduction for people who plan to travel to Italy or to participate in a study-abroad program.

This course is suitable for those who have completed <i>Italian II</i> in this department, or who have taken a semester of college-level Italian at another institution. The course combines 51 hours of classroom instruction with six hours of guided field trips. Expand your vocabulary, enrich your grammatical resources, and develop your conversational skills. Practice the language and experience the culture through visits to Italian neighborhoods in New York City.

If you have previously studied Italian and want to review the basics, or if you have a strong knowledge of a cognate language, then this class is an appropriate next step in your study of Italian. This fast-paced course condenses the material covered in two levels into the time it normally takes to complete one. Homework assignments are an important part of the curriculum. Classes are conducted in Italian.

This course is geared toward those who have successfully completed <i>Italian I </i>or the equivalent and would like to move at a faster pace. We will begin the course by reviewing what you already know, strengthening your usages of the same through conversation and writing. Then, we will quickly move on to refine those skills with additional verb tenses and moods, as well as&nbsp;lots of new vocabulary. You will produce various kinds of texts for this class according to different grammar lessons, and your writings and our discussions will tap into many facets of Italian culture through exposure to art, literature, film, and music. This course is intended for those who have completed <em><a href="https://www.sps.nyu.edu/professional-pathways/courses/ital1-ce9003" target="_blank">Italian III</a>,</em> or who have a comparable level of proficiency in the basics of grammar and everyday vocabulary on a wide range of topics. It focuses on developing strong communication skills, expanding vocabulary, and improving grammatical accuracy. Course work includes a variety of group and individual activities, oral presentations, and readings of authentic texts.

<p>Learn how to utilize Italian in a self-sufficient manner&mdash;and in a variety of communicative situations required in real life. Using fundamental sentence structures in the present and past tenses, practice listening and speaking through simple conversations in which you develop familiar talking points with sufficient clarity. Engage in writing and reading exercises to find specific information and identify unknown words based on context. Sing &quot;Volare&quot; and the Italian national anthem, discuss cuisine &nbsp;and share your favorite Italian recipe, and investigate regions of Italy such as Tuscany, Lazio, and Umbria to discover what makes them truly unique. Upon successful completion of the course, achieve a high-novice level of proficiency.</p>

<p> Understand commonly used terminology related to critical topics, including personal and family information, shopping, surroundings, and employment. Communicate more effectively in everyday situations; contrast between the imperfect and past tenses; and become more comfortable with reflexives, imperatives, direct object pronouns, and the idiomatic use of the future tense. Learn to accurately and effectively discuss shopping, eating out, people, and situations; obtain permission; communicate a refusal; and express your needs. Lectures, films, and events at the Italian-American Museum, the Cultural Italian Institute, and the Casa Italiana NYU afford the chance to interact with people who share your interests and your passion for language.</p>

This course focuses on the diverse facets of contemporary Italian culture through the discussion of an array of print and non-print materials, including articles, selected readings, videos, literature, and cinematic texts on contemporary Italian politics and society. These are the starting points for lively discussions in Italian, correlating with advanced vocabulary expansion and review of sophisticated grammatical structures. Also, gain the ability to communicate in and to understand rapidly-spoken Italian.

Opera originated in 17th-century Italy and has since won millions of fans around the world. Deepen your appreciation of this extraordinary art form and learn Italian at the same time! This course introduces you to the most famous Italian arias through an array of audio and video selections. Class discussions, conducted in Italian, combine close textual analysis with interactive speaking activities that allow you to learn opera-specific vocabulary and to better understand opera&rsquo;s dramatic structures, characters, costumes, settings, and musical styles. In regard to Italian-language study, build your vocabulary, improve your pronunciation, and develop more fluid conversational skills.
