This course is for those who have successfully completed the textbook series <em>Integrated Chinese</em> or the equivalent. In this class, read and analyze short stories in Chinese of major political and cultural events and influential figures of Chinese history and their impact on and relevance to modern-day China. Also, examine and learn to use properly the ever-so-important four-character idioms. Watch and discuss a few movies or movie excerpts in Mandarin based upon popular historical events or legends, such as <em>Confucius,</em> <em>Hua Mulan,</em> and <em>The Battle of Red Cliff</em> (subject to change), and when appropriate, compare them with their Western counterparts. Upon successful completion of the course, you will emerge with a set of cultural and linguistic tools that allow you to engage in the history of China in a nuanced, civilized way.
