Foreign Languages (PORT1-CE)

Brazil has the second-largest economy in the Americas and shares a border with nine countries. Come expand your own borders in this course, appropriate for beginners as well as those with basic knowledge of Portuguese. Fundamental language patterns and daily vocabulary of Brazilian Portuguese are introduced. The course focuses on all four core skill areas (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) while emphasizing pronunciation and grammar. Practice present, past, and future tenses in a variety of contexts, ranging from informal conversations to formal dialogues. Learn the indefinite and definite articles, prepositions, and basic sentence structures. Become more familiar with topics in Brazilian culture related to food, ways of life, and customs. If you have a solid knowledge of Portuguese language basics (essential vocabulary, verb forms, and basic tenses), or if you have completed Level II and wish to learn at an accelerated pace, then this course is for you. Focus on expanding your vocabulary, mastering more complex grammatical structures, and holding simple conversations. This fast-paced course condenses the material covered in two levels into the time it normally takes to complete one. Homework assignments are an important part of the curriculum. Classes are conducted in Portuguese.

This course is designed for high-beginner to intermediate learners of Portuguese who seek the language skills to facilitate professional communication with speakers of Brazilian Portuguese. Coursework includes a variety of group and individual activities, oral presentations, and readings on business topics. Emphasis is on developing strong communication skills, expanding vocabulary, and improving grammatical accuracy. Learn practical Portuguese skills to use in the workplace, which can be applied to email, phone conversations, virtual meetings, socialization, field-specific terminology, and intercultural awareness. <em>Registering at least two weeks prior to the course start date is highly recommended.</em>

This course is suitable for those who have completed <i>Portuguese II</i>&nbsp;at NYU-SCPS, or who have taken one semester of college-level Portuguese at another institution. In 51 hours of classroom instruction and six hours of guided field trips, expand your vocabulary, enrich your grammatical resources, and develop your conversational skills. Practice the language, sample the food, and experience the culture through visits to Portuguese-speaking neighborhoods in New York City.

If you have an elementary knowledge of Portuguese grammar and vocabulary, learn the basic structures of the language (present, past, and future tenses) in this fast-paced course. Practice using these structures in contexts ranging from informal conversations to formal dialogues and in various settings, such as at a university, in a restaurant, and in a store. Homework assignments help you to master what you learn in class.

Learn advanced grammatical structures and expressions in Portuguese, including present, future, and subjunctive (present and past) tenses. The course places emphasis on oral communication, listening skills, written communication, and reading comprehension of complex texts. The goal is to improve your ability to understand spoken Portuguese and to be able to discuss a range of topics, such as Brazilian cities, ways of life, and history.

If you are an intermediate to advanced student with a good command of Portuguese grammar and vocabulary, then this course offers you the opportunity to continue your language study at an accelerated pace. Review and learn complex linguistic structures, including conditional sentences, subjunctives (present, past, and future), and compound sentences. Develop a more sophisticated vocabulary by watching videos and discussing various topics related to Brazilian history, current events, and literary texts.

Taught almost entirely in Portuguese and targeted to individual learners&rsquo; skill levels, this course focuses on conversational Portuguese, helping you to activate the knowledge you already have and strengthening your ability to communicate in Portuguese accurately and effectively. Through a variety of paired, small-group, and whole-class activities that rely on interaction and participation, you&rsquo;ll increase your fluency in the Portuguese language and your knowledge of Brazilian culture. In this dynamic and interactive course, gain the language skills to engage in conversations, discussions, and to communicate with greater ease in Brazilian Portuguese. This intensive course, designed for those with limited or no previous knowledge of Portuguese, presents basic language patterns and common daily vocabulary. Learn how to greet people, to introduce yourself, to express needs as well as likes and dislikes, and to talk about daily activities. Practice grammar, reading, writing, and listening in Portuguese, and learn about topics in Brazilian culture related to food, ways of life, and customs.

<p>In this interactive intermediate-level course, hone your speaking, listening, and writing skills in Brazilian Portuguese. Gain exposure to the Brazilian language and culture by watching a selection of movies dating from 1993 to 2003, such as <i>Central Station</i>, all of which touch upon major themes in Brazilian society. Then, engage in discussions of the films and participate in exercises and activities that help deepen your understanding of the movies&rsquo; themes. Classes provide ample opportunities for strengthening your speaking skills and expanding your vocabulary and range of grammatical expression. This course is appropriate for students who have completed Level VI in this department or who have reached the intermediate-mid level on the ACTFL proficiency scale.</p>
