Preclinical Skills (PCL08-DN)

This course is designed to provide the foundational knowledge of orthodontic diagnosis, thru lectures, interactive hands-on exercises and clinical simulation cases. The course will offer the tools for the students to build the basic skills in formulating diagnosis and the clinical management of the young, adolescent and adult patients. It will also review the basic concepts in craniofacial growth in conjunction with their clinical applications. In addition, the course provides hand-on sessions that reinforces the taught principles. This course is open only to students in the Doctor of Dental Surgery program. Core curriculum.

This course will introduce the student to Interprofessional Education (IPE) and Interprofessional Practice (IPP). Using lectures and case-based presentations, students will become familiarized with the underlying basis for using a collaborative approach to oral healthcare that can enhance our patients’ treatment outcomes. This course is open only to students in the Doctor of Dental Surgery program. Core curriculum.

The course will offer the tools for the students to build the basic knowledge in orthodontic principles and the clinical management of the young, adolescent and adult patients. It will review the basic concepts in orthodontic tooth movement, biomechanics and some orthodontic appliance and their clinical applications. In addition, the course will shed light on multidisciplinary orthodontic treatment in conjunction with other specialties. This course is open only to students in the Doctor of Dental Surgery program. This course prepares students for competence in basic Orthodontic diagnosis and management. Reviewing and applying components of patient diagnosis and treatment planning in the context of simulated cases, students make clinical decisions based in reason and evidence. Skills assessed include: Diagnosis of malocclusion; Diagnosis of skeletal problems; Treatment planning; Space management (upper and lower arches). Attention is given to occlusal examination, evaluation of facial form and proportion, and radiographic interpretation. The course prepares students to recognize the role of Orthodontics in comprehensive patient care as well as when to seek consultation from a specialist. Foundational knowledge presented in D1 and D2 is reviewed in the context of case-based analysis. This course is open only to students in the Doctor of Dental Surgery program. Core curriculum.

The course will provide students with the knowledge to plan and provide comprehensive dental care to children, adolescents, and patients with special health care needs. Students will be able to adapt knowledge about health promotion, anticipatory guidance, growth guidance including developmental problems, comprehensive restorative dentistry, pain and anxiety management, and special patient care as they apply to the pediatric patient. The D3 Advanced Pediatric Dentistry course coincides with students' individual D3 Pediatric Dentistry Clinic Rotation (CLS09-DN 3608) allowing opportunities for clinical application of foundational knowledge. This assessment concludes the curricular track for competence in management of malocclusion/skeletal problems and space management. Based on simulated cases, students make clinical decisions and demonstrate the evidence-based rationale for their decisions. Skills assessed include: Diagnosis of malocclusion; Diagnosis of skeletal problems; Treatment planning; Space management (upper and lower arches).
