Students work closely with residents, fellows, house officers, and faculty members, many of whom are top experts in the field of obstetrics and gynecology."

"The Obstetrics and Gynecology Sub-Internship is a 4-week rotation at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine. The overall goal of the Sub-Internship in Obstetrics and Gynecology is to develop competence in the fundamentals of obstetrics and gynecology to expand the studentÕs proficiency and fuller independence in the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of a variety of diseases and disorders of these patients. The clinical experience will be focused on the inpatient labor and delivery unit whereby the Sub-Intern will function as part of the house staff team and will manage assigned cases under the supervision of ob-gynecology residents and faculty. In addition there will be time spent on the inpatient gynecology service and in ob-gyn office hours."

OBGYN-ML 4054  Urogynecology & Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery  (4 Credits)

"The elective in Urogynecology & Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery is offered to provide an opportunity for the medical student to participate in the management of female patients with urogynecologic conditions. The student will spend 4 weeks on the Urogynecology Service with the purpose to give the student an in-depth exposure to conditions of pelvic floor dysfunction, lower urinary tract disorders, urogynecologic testing, evaluation and treatment of urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. The student will participate in the evaluation of urogynecologic patients in the office setting with a variety of female urologic problems including pelvic organ prolapse, urge and stress incontinence, overflow, voiding dysfunction, urogenital fistula, fecal incontinence and painful bladder syndromes. Students will be exposed to urogynecologic testing including multichannel urodynamics and cystoscopy in the office setting where they will also be involved in medical and conservative treatments. They will also assist in the operating room and participate in the surgical treatment during vaginal, abdominal, robotic procedures and neuromodulation. The students will be involved in the perioperative care for all urogynecologic patients. There will be formal and informal didactics along with bedside teaching with attendings and residents on a daily basis. The division of Urogynecology has had an active research interest and is currently engaged in ongoing projects. Interested students are encouraged to participate in the ongoing clinical research. Previous students have published their research in peer reviewed journals and presented their data at national meetings. There will be no night or weekend call responsibilities for this rotation."

OBGYN-ML 4094  Maternal Fetal Medicine  (2 Credits)

"The Maternal-Fetal Medicine Elective will increase the medical studentÕs breath of knowledge regarding high risk pregnancies. Students will participate in the diagnosis and care of mothers and fetuses of high risk pregnancies in the ante-, intra- and post-partum periods as part of the MFM care team in the ultrasound unit, ambulatory and inpatient consultation sessions and office hours, as well as in intensive care settings. Preconception consultations, optimization of maternal and fetal well-being throughout gestation, prenatal diagnosis and diagnostic testing (amniocentesis, chorionic villous sampling), and aneuploidy screening techniques are emphasized. The student works directly with the house staff, fellows and attending MFM physicians and will attend and participate in all conferences, lectures and patient care meetings within our division as well as weekly Grand Rounds for the department."

OBGYN-ML 4096  Maternal Fetal Medicine - Inpatient Elective  (2 Credits)

"On the inpatient Maternal-Fetal Medicine elective, the student will work directly with the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Attendings, Fellows and residents. Students will be part of the Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) team rounding on antepartum hospitalized patients, new inpatient consultation, surgical interventions and diagnostic procedures. Inpatient hospital coverage includes High Risk consultation and management, cervical cerclage placement and removal, amnioreduction and amnioinfusion, vaginal and cesarean deliveries of High Risk patients. We will often coordination, management and surgical assistance of deliveries complicated by placenta previa and suspected placenta accrete spectrum. The inpatient MFM team typically leads the obstetrical hemorrhage ÒCode HÓ and Massive Transfusion Protocols as well as involvement with obstetrical patients requiring Rapid Response Calls. In addition, the student will be involved with our daily MFM led Safety Rounds on Labor & Delivery to improve perinatal outcomes by involving all members of the patientÕs care team including nursing, anesthesia and fetal heart rate tracing review. This inpatient rotation is an extended and focused experience to the general 4-week Maternal-Fetal Medicine rotation. The schedule of rotation and educational didactics will depend on the attending service during the time block."

OBGYN-ML 4097  Maternal Fetal Medicine - Outpatient  (2 Credits)

"On the outpatient Maternal-Fetal Medicine elective, the student will work directly with the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Attendings and Fellows. The student will experience High Risk Pregnancy and Adverse Pregnancy Outcome consultations, prenatal care for High Risk patients, diagnostic fetal testing (amniocentesis/chorionic villous sampling), genetic counseling, saline sonography and ultrasonography. The Adverse Pregnancy Outcome program will review the multitude of possible causes for a loss of a pregnancy in the preconception or pregnant state. This outpatient and outpatient experience will allow the student to see the overall outpatient scope of this obstetrical High Risk sub-specialty. During the last week the student will tailor their exposure depending on their particular interest."

OBGYN-ML 4153  Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility  (2 Credits)

"During the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility rotation, the student is expected to be ready to learn the fundamentals of fertility treatment and evaluation for the female patient. The student will shadow the physician during the morning ultrasound monitoring, observe procedures such as intrauterine insemination, endometrial biopsies, saline sonohisterograms, oocyte retrievals and embryo transfer. The student will be present during the history taking of new and existing patients and expected to read up on various clinical conditions. The student is also expected to give a 15 minute powerpoint presentation on any REI topic of their choice."

OBGYN-ML 4170  Gynecologic Oncology  (2 Credits)

"This elective will provide students with an overview of the evaluation and treatment of patients with digestive health and nutrition problems. Students will have the opportunity to participate in the care of hospitalized patients and patients in the outpatient GI clinics. They will also have the opportunity to observe a variety of endoscopic procedures. The direct patient care experience and clinical teaching is supplemented by tutorial sessions devoted to key area of gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition and by participating in a variety of conferences including GI case conferences, GI journal club, GI radiology and pathology conferences."
