Academic Standing and Progress

Academic Standing

Students maintain good academic standing for each semester when they successfully complete the minimum criteria for credits and semester GPA, and are also making reasonable progress toward meeting their overall degree requirements.  The specific criteria to maintain good academic standing are defined by the school.

The following academic standing status are available, although each school determines whether or not they may use a particular definition:

  • Good Standing: Status that indicates a student is meeting specific academic standards set by their school.
  • Official Warning: Status that indicates a student is at risk of being placed on probation according to academic standards set by their school.
  • Probation: Status that indicates a student is not in good standing and must improve their standing by meeting specific academic standards set by their school.
  • Continued Probation: Status that indicates a student has been on probation multiple terms.
  • Terminal Probation: Status that indicates a student’s final allowed term on probation and that failure to meet academic standards will result in suspension or dismissal.
  • Suspension: Status that indicates a student is temporarily separated from their school for a period of time (typically, for at least one semester).
  • Dismissal: Status that indicates a student is separated from their school due to (a) an academic violation (e.g., cheating, plagiarism, etc.) of code of conduct, or (b) academic disqualification for failure to meet academic standards set by their school.
  • Dismissed: Status that indicates a student separated from their school for any reason.

Academic standing for each term is determined by a student's performance in the preceding term. It is expected that the academic standing for all students will be accurately reflected no later than the commencement of the upcoming term.

Satisfactory Academic Progress

Students are expected to make satisfactory academic progress throughout their time at NYU.  Satisfactory academic progress is determined by a number of factors depending on their degree level, among other factors.  Additional information can be found in the Office of Financial Aid’s policy on Academic Progress.
