Program Description

Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (PNPs) assess, diagnose, and treat infants, children, adolescents, and young adults in all primary care settings.

Our program prepares baccalaureate prepared RNs with at least one year of experience in pediatrics to excel as primary care PNPs using evidence-based practice guidelines, research, and the best available evidence to determine treatment plans. Students are encouraged to be active participants in classroom and clinical settings and to be involved in national NP organizations. Students have opportunities to become engaged in scholarly activities and have presented their findings at national conferences. Students graduate with either an MS or DNP degree and are eligible to take the national certification examination offered by the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB) to become a Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner - Primary Care (CPNP-PC).

NYU Meyers PNP graduates are employed throughout the United States and recognized as leaders in pediatric healthcare. PNPs are strong advocates for healthcare policies designed to improve the health and well-being of all pediatric/adolescent and young adults.

Goals

  • Analyze the physical, emotional, behavioral, social, and economic impact of treatment planning on culturally diverse clients using a family-centered framework.
  • Participate in collaborative practice with other healthcare professionals in designing a comprehensive approach to acute and chronic care of infants, children, adolescent, and young adults.
  • Critique clinical practice guidelines, relevant research, and quality improvement studies to determine best practices for the care of infants, children, adolescents, and young adults who present for primary or episodic healthcare visits.
  • Evaluate leadership and advocacy roles of PNPs in influencing health policy and healthcare delivery systems on children and families across diverse settings.
  • Develop professional writing and scholarly presentation skills.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning to maintain clinical competence in an ever-changing healthcare environment.

Practicum Opportunities

  • Clinical placements are arranged by faculty for each student to achieve their personal and professional practice goals
  • Students have placements in pediatric primary care clinical practices and in pediatric specialty practices, e.g., pediatric pulmonary, cardiovascular, oncology, endocrine, musculoskeletal settings
  • Students have one-to-one experiences in clinical settings with expert pediatric nurse practitioners who guide and evaluate student learning in conjunction with the Program Director to assure individual student success in each clinical course and upon graduation

Admissions

Access the application for our MS programs. All applicants to our MS programs are required to submit the following documents at the time of application:

  1. One (1) transcript from each post-secondary school attended. We can review applications with unofficial transcripts. Admitted students will be asked to submit official transcripts prior to beginning coursework at NYU Meyers.
  2. Resume.
  3. A two- to three-page personal statement.
  4. At least two (2) letters of recommendation.
  5. RN license and registration certificate. Applicants may submit an application with an out-of-state license, but admitted students must obtain a New York State RN license prior to beginning coursework at NYU Meyers.

Applicants who have attended a post-secondary institution outside of the United States are required to upload one (1) transcript from each post-secondary school attended and submit one (1) official course-by-course evaluation of each foreign transcript directly to our office at the time of application. For applicants whose native language is not English, a copy of the applicant's latest TOEFL or IELTS score is required. Admitted students will be asked to submit official test scores prior to beginning coursework at NYU Meyers. We require a minimum TOEFL internet-based score of 100 and an IELTS Band score of 7.

Eligibility

  • A BS in nursing or BS/BA in a non-nursing field together with an associate’s degree in nursing
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • NYS nursing license prior to beginning coursework
  • Prior to beginning the adult-gerontology acute care nurse practitioner master’s program, at least one year of full-time clinical experience as a registered nurse is required.
  • Must have taken a basic statistics course and a basic research course at the undergraduate level

Pediatrics Additional Requirements

  • Prior to entering the specialty courses of the pediatrics program, at least one year full-time clinical experience as a registered nurse in pediatrics is required.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification is required prior to entering the first clinical pediatric clinical course.

Applicants are encouraged to apply early. All deadlines listed are ‘in office’ deadlines, not postmark deadlines. It is always to the candidate’s best advantage to apply early, especially when applying for financial aid.

Application Fee

The application fee is $85 dollars. Applications will not be processed until the application fee has been paid. Application fees are non-refundable and must be received by the stated application deadlines.

Fee Waivers

NYU Meyers waives fees for applications based on financial hardship or US military service/US veteran status. To request that the application fee be waived, please submit a request to nursing.admissions@nyu.edu when submitting an application. The request should include the applicant's full name and the program to which they are applying. We will notify applicants via email when their request for an application fee waiver has been approved.

For Students with International Credentials

If an applicant's academic credentials are not in English and/or are from a foreign school with a grading system not based on a 4.0 overall GPA, we strongly suggest evaluation and translation. Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc (ECE) is the preferred service. ECE prepares evaluation reports that identify the United States equivalents of educational qualifications earned in other countries. To request an evaluation report, applicants must complete and submit an application form, along with all required documentation and all applicable fees. ECE will complete most evaluation reports in approximately 15 to 20 business days from the date they receive all required documentation and fees.
