This course introduces the dental student to pediatric dentistry, providing a positive first experience in the role of the health professional. It introduces the student to pediatric prevention in a community setting. It also provides the dental student with the opportunity to provide oral hygiene instruction to large numbers of children and to begin to differentiate between developmental expectations for different age groups. This course is open only to students in the Doctor of Dental Surgery program. Core curriculum.

CLS09-DN 2509  Initial Clin Experience Pediatric Outreach  (0.5 Credits)

This course introduces the dental student to pediatric oral health promotion and disease prevention in a community setting. It provides the students a positive first experience in the role of the health professional. It gives the student an opportunity to clinically examine large numbers of children and to begin to differentiate between developmental milestones for different age groups. There are two possible sites for ICE, one site is an Early Childhood Education Center serving pre-school children where students provide oral hygiene instruction (OHI), nutritional counseling, knee to knee or head on lap dental examinations, and application of fluoride varnish. The other site is a public school where the dental students will be able to apply dental sealants, in addition to OHI, comprehensive dental examinations and fluoride varnish. This course is open only to students in the Doctor of Dental Surgery program. Core curriculum.

CLS09-DN 3608  Pediatric Dentistry Clinic  (2 Credits)

The course will provide third year dental students with live, in-person comprehensive care to the pediatric dental patient. Each student will have the opportunity to follow the pediatric patient from initial presentation, collection and interpretation of diagnostic data and devising a comprehensive sequential treatment plan. The student will also participate in emergency care, as well as coordinate treatment in other specialty areas. Students will have an opportunity to be involved in a variety of clinical experiences, such as exposure to Bellevue Hospital and Comprehensive Care, a school-based community outreach program. During the Pediatric Dentistry Seminar, a pediatric faculty will present different pediatric cases. Students will participate in the active discussion of diagnosis and treatment planning. This course is open only to students in the Doctor of Dental Surgery program. Core curriculum.

Each student will have the opportunity to follow the pediatric patient from initial presentation, collection and interpretation of diagnostic data and devising a comprehensive sequential treatment plan.
