Program Description
The Advanced Certificate in Vocal Pedagogy is designed to meet the needs of students who have completed either a Master of Music or Master of Arts and who wish to teach private voice. This 16-credit program provides students with advanced training based in the most current research findings in the areas of voice science and pedagogical practice. Students receive specialized training in vocal pedagogy, particularly as it relates to the integration of classical and contemporary vocalisms.
Admissions
Admission to graduate programs in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development requires the following minimum components:
- Résumé/CV
- Statement of Purpose
- Letters of Recommendation
- Transcripts
- Proficiency in English

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will:
- Demonstrate an understanding of vocal anatomy, physiology and functionality of the vocal instrument that will allow them to evaluate a singing voice in regards to its technical needs and train singers to develop sustainable and efficient vocal coordination.
- Identify stylistic differences and vocal strategies (by employing vocal acoustics concepts) needed for training singers in classical, musical theatre and contemporary singing.
- Select appropriate repertoire that matches the needs of singing students taking into account the style, genre, technical ability and level of vocal coordination.
- Select appropriate tools for training a healthy, injured or previously injured voice, taking into account any possible limitations affecting vocal function and the development of optimal vocal coordination.
