Program Description
This 12-credit advanced certificate is available only as a dual-degree option for students enrolled in the School Counseling (MA) program. The program provides advanced development of school counselor skills in the areas of consultation, social justice, prevention, and post-secondary counseling.
Accreditation and Licensure
The MA program is accredited by the Master’s in Psychology and Counseling Accreditation Council (MPCAC) for 2015 through 2025. Graduates of this program meet the academic requirements for licensure in the state of New York. Each state sets their own policies, regulations, and standards for licensure. Students who intend to pursue licensure in a state other than New York should consult the MA program's Licensure page for more information on whether this program meets the academic requirements for licensure in that state and whether there is additional course work the student may need to complete to meet that state’s requirements.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will:
- Implement and evaluate effective school counseling programs for prevention and intervention.
- Create and assess college and career readiness programs for secondary students.
- Identify and apply techniques and strategies for effective consultation within the lens of contextual variables (e.g., culture, systems of power, etc.) that can influence the implementation, process, and outcomes of consultation.
- Demonstrate understanding of the process of advocacy in light of the barriers and challenges that school counselors face in terms of social justice to address inequities in our society.

Fieldwork Placement
Be advised that fieldwork placement facilities that provide training required for your program degree, and agencies that issue licenses for practice in your field of study, each may require you to undergo general and criminal background checks, the results of which the facility or agency must find acceptable before it will allow you to train at its facility or issue you a license. You should inform yourself of offenses or other facts that may prevent obtaining a license to practice in your field of study. NYU Steinhardt will not be responsible if you are unable to complete program requirements or cannot obtain a license to practice in your field because of the results of such background.
