Program Description
The PhD program in Music Education offers a specialized focus in Music Therapy. For credentialed music therapists with an articulated area of clinical specialization who want to develop research skills, this curriculum permits students to design a program of study based on their specific areas of interest. Course work and dissertation topics are drawn from qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods options. Students can complete this program by studying on a full-time or part-time basis. Graduates are prepared for academic, research, and leadership positions in music therapy.
Admissions
Admission to graduate programs in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development requires the following minimum components:

- Statement of Purpose

- Proficiency in English

Following completion of the required coursework for the PhD, students are expected to maintain active status at New York University by enrolling in a research/writing course or a Maintain Matriculation (MAINT-GE 4747) course. All non-course requirements must be fulfilled prior to degree conferral, although the specific timing of completion may vary from student-to-student.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will:
- Design, develop and implement research projects using multiple approaches, such as quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods, as well as arts-based and community-based participatory research methods.
Critically engage with, employ, and critique multiple theoretical and philosophical frameworks prevalent in music therapy settings.
Effectively communicate, verbally and in writing, about their own and others’ research and about contemporary educational and clinical practice in music therapy settings.
