Program Description
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies is designed for those who wish to prepare for a career as a professor or researcher of educational leadership and policy while interrogating multiple aspects of schools and other educational institutions. The curriculum emphasizes critical analysis of contemporary problems of practice in collaborative study environments with professors, school leaders, and doctoral students.
Admissions
Admission to graduate programs in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development requires the following minimum components:
- Résumé/CV
- Statement of Purpose
- Letters of Recommendation
- Transcripts
- Proficiency in English

Students combine coursework with extensive work each term on dissertation research. Following completion of the required coursework for the PhD, students are expected to maintain active status at New York University by enrolling in a research/writing course or a Maintain Matriculation (MAINT-GE 4747) course. All non-course requirements must be fulfilled prior to degree conferral, although the specific timing of completion may vary from student-to-student.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will:
- Demonstrate expertise in the field of K-12 education and related components in both verbal and written form and effectively communicate complex ideas based on research outcomes to disseminate their scholarly work in their field of study.
- Map relevant research and theoretical frameworks that enhance both an understanding of a problem of practice and the need for further research.
- Design and execute an original research project to address an identified problem and employ appropriate research approaches to address the problem.
- Contribute to the public discourse on organizational behavior, educational reform, and educational policy from an equity and social justice-based lens.
