Program Description

This MA program in Childhood Special Education is open to participants who have a bachelor’s degree and hold certification or are eligible for certification in childhood education. Upon successful completion of the program, participants are eligible for New York State professional certification in special education at the childhood level (grades 1–6).
The curriculum focuses on strategies to adapt curricula, learning environments, and assessments to address the different intellectual, emotional, and behavioral needs of students and on approaches for working with children with emotional/behavioral disabilities, including educating children with severe/multiple disabilities.

Admissions

Admission to graduate programs in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development requires the following minimum components:

  • Résumé/CV
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Letters of Recommendation
  • Transcripts
  • Proficiency in English
