Program Description

This post-baccalaureate advanced certificate is for educators who want to extend and expand their teaching into the context of bilingual education. Applicants must hold or be eligible for New York State initial teaching certificate in their primary area. Certified teachers in childhood, early childhood, and select middle and high school content areas may be eligible for the New York State's Bilingual Extension Certificate.. 

Coursework emphasizes theories and practices of bilingual education and teaching additional languages, methods of teaching language arts and literacy with a bilingual approach, and intercultural perspectives and issues of diversity and equity in multilingual and multicultural education. Students complete one semester of supervised student teaching in a bilingual education setting in New York City schools. 

Careers and Outcomes

Graduates are prepared for a multitude of career opportunities, including teacher, researcher, curriculum developer, or administrator in schools, community organizations, international agencies, publishing companies, and multinational corporations.

Admissions

Admission to graduate programs in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development requires the following minimum components:

  • Résumé/CV
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Letters of Recommendation
  • Transcripts
  • Proficiency in English
