Program Description

The Advanced Certificate in Social Data Science at the Graduate School of Arts and Science (GSAS) offers PhD students in the Sociology and Politics doctoral programs advanced training in cutting-edge quantitative methods, with a particular focus on computational, machine learning, and experimental approaches. The curriculum exposes students to a wide range of analytical tools that are core to data science and gives them the opportunity to deepen their expertise in several of them through specialized advanced courses. Central to the program is the development of a strong understanding of appropriate research designs matched to theoretically relevant scholarly questions. Although most students will graduate from the program as experts in the application of data science methods to social science problems, those with a deeper interest in developing new methods and becoming methodologists will also be supported through courses, close advising, and exposure to top scholars across relevant fields. The target audiences are both students who want to become methodologists—pushing the boundaries of what existing methods can do—as well as applied quantitative social scientists who want to pursue substantive research using cutting-edge methods—adopting and elaborating existing quantitative techniques.
