Program Description
The 14- to 16-credit minor in Teacher Education provides a foundational look into the study of education and human development and an opportunity for students to explore becoming an early childhood, elementary, middle, or high school teacher. Students take core coursework in education and human development and choose from electives in general education, special education, English and literacy education, world languages and TESOL, and math, science, and social studies education.
While this minor does not qualify students for initial teacher certification, course work in the minor provides skills applicable to:
- Classroom teaching, through graduate study in a teacher certification program or a program like Teach for America
- Advocacy work on behalf of children, youth, parents, and families
- Nonprofits, domestic and international nongovernmental organizations, and government positions in education in the US and abroad
- The Peace Corps and other international development or education work
Students who complete the minor are also prepared for careers or further study in related fields such as psychology, counseling, social work, publishing, educational technology, and health, including positions working with children or adolescents with special needs.
Minor Declaration
To request declaration of a minor, Steinhardt students should discuss requirements with the minor department’s advising team and complete the Minor Application in Albert. To request declaration of a cross-school minor, Steinhardt students should complete the online Minor Application available in their Albert Student Center. Students may also use the Minor Application in Albert to request cancellation of a Steinhardt or cross-school minor.
