The minor in Asian Film and Media, offered by the Martin Scorsese Department of Cinema Studies in the Tisch School of the Arts, is designed to provide an interdisciplinary and comparative focus on the historical and contemporary media forms of Asia as well as in-depth study of particular regions and topics. Students investigate the aesthetic forms of popular and art cinemas, the political economy of the film and media industry, audiences, mass culture, media activism, and experimental audiovisual arts in film, video, anime, television, radio, and digital media.
Minor Declaration
To request declaration of a CAS minor, CAS students should visit the host department. To request declaration of a minor in another NYU school, CAS students should complete the online Minor Application available in their Albert Student Center. Students may also use the Minor Application in Albert to request cancellation of a minor in CAS or in another NYU unit.
Program Requirements
The minor requires four 4-credit courses (16 credits) completed with a grade of C or better (courses graded Pass/Fail do not count) as outlined below. See the Cinema Studies department website for an updated list of courses or for minor advising.
Students may elect to take both CINE-UT 112 and CINE-UT 450, but it is not required. One of these core courses for the minor (or an approved substitute) should be offered per year.
Consult with the Martin Scorsese Department of Cinema Studies for current course listings. The course list is only a sampling of courses that will fulfill the elective portion (two courses) of the minor. All other courses must be approved by the director of the Asian Film and Media Initiative or another Department of Cinema Studies academic adviser.
