Program Description

Midwifery education is a synthesis drawing upon the student’s maturity and willingness to take active responsibility for their learning and the faculty’s experience and knowledge of the profession. While the learning styles of students may vary, mutual respect between students and faculty solidifies the midwifery educational process at NYU Meyers. Nurse-Midwifery is a blending of science balanced with art, the learning of theory is simultaneously reinforced by practical hands-on application and experience. In the end, students are maturated not merely with knowledge of midwifery but experience in its practical, clinical application.

The faculty’s commitment to didactic learning of a specific knowledge base is not compromised by a focus on imparting the Midwifery Model of Care. The faculty instill a belief in the right of every person to receive care in the context of their uniqueness in all dimensions, namely, the spiritual, emotional, psychological, psychosocial, and physical. The Midwifery Model of Care, respects, enhances, and supports the normal physiological process while understanding the importance of independent, consultative, and referral practice components.

Program content is based on the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) core competencies for basic midwifery practice.  An evidence-based approach to teaching midwifery competency is utilized by a faculty representing a range of expertise in all areas and places of midwifery practice. Students are encouraged through a problem-based learning approach to actively participate in their education as well as that of their colleagues.  At NYU Meyers we teach our student nurse-midwives how to be self-educators/learners. Ultimately, the goal is not merely competency but an understanding that midwifery education is a career-long process. To sustain competency, evaluation of care through self-examination, evaluation of practice as part of continuous quality improvement (CQI), and development of the evidence base for practice through research are essential to setting and maintaining standards.

The provision of comprehensive, integrated, ethical care requires cultural awareness, sensitivity, and competence on the part of the practitioner. In addition to core competencies and comprehension of the Midwifery Model of Care, student nurse-midwives are also given an understanding of the commitment that is expected of them as members of the profession at large. Nurse-Midwives are advocates for the needs of those they care for throughout their lifespans. They must be socially and politically vigilant and active in ensuring that public policies effectively ensure all health needs. Student midwives are groomed as future leaders. Midwifery is not just a career, it is a calling. All of this represents the philosophy and the commitment of the NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing Nurse-Midwifery Program.

Admissions

The application for our Advanced Certificate programs is available. All applicants to our Advanced Certificate programs are required to submit the following documents at the time of application:

  1. One (1) transcript from each post-secondary school attended. We can review applications with unofficial transcripts. Admitted students will be asked to submit official transcripts prior to beginning coursework at NYU Meyers.
  2. Resume.
  3. A two- to three-page personal statement.
  4. At least two (2) letters of recommendation.
  5. RN license and registration certificate. Applicants may submit an application with an out-of-state license, but admitted students must obtain a New York State RN license prior to beginning coursework at NYU Meyers.

Applicants who have attended a post-secondary institution outside of the United States are required to upload one (1) transcript from each post-secondary school attended and submit one (1) official course-by-course evaluation of each foreign transcript directly to our office at the time of application. Applications will not be reviewed without these documents. Please mail official course-by-course evaluation(s) to:

For applicants whose native language is not English, a copy of the applicant's latest TOEFL or IELTS score is required. Admitted students will be asked to submit official test scores prior to beginning coursework at NYU Meyers. We require a minimum TOEFL internet-based score of 100 and an IELTS Band score of 7.

Eligibility

  • Master’s degree in nursing
  • GPA of 3.0
  • NYS nursing license prior to beginning coursework
  • Ability to successfully complete the academic and clinical requirements of the advanced certificate programs
  • Prior to entering the specialty courses of a respective nursing master’s program, at least one year of full-time clinical experience as a registered nurse is required

Important Notes

We encourage applicants to fill out a FAFSA form at the time that they apply.

Applicants are encouraged to apply early. All deadlines listed are ‘in office’ deadlines, not postmark deadlines. It is always to the candidate’s best advantage to apply early, especially when applying for financial aid. Should any of the dates listed fall on a weekend, the deadline will be the next working day.

Application Fee

The application fee is $85 dollars. Applications will not be processed until the application fee has been paid. Application fees are non-refundable and must be received by the stated application deadlines.

Fee Waivers

NYU Meyers waives fees for applications based on financial hardship or US military service/US veteran status. To request that the application fee be waived, please submit a request to nursing.admissions@nyu.edu when submitting an application. The request should include the applicant's full name and the program to which they are applying. We will notify applicants via email when their request for an application fee waiver has been approved.
