Data and Education (Minor)

Department Website

Program Description

In this minor, students learn how data-driven solutions and applications can improve and inform education practices, policy making, and implementation, and how education, as a tool, can impact many aspects of society beyond school boundaries. Students develop knowledge through foundations courses and practice your skills in survey development, data literacy, quantitative problem solving, and AI literacy in a data and education practicum course.

Students use a critical lens to examine important issues in the use of data to address education issues, such as access and equity, ethics and values, both in the US and globally. Students learn how to understand and manage education data, how to think about and examine the complexities of education data, how and why education data are collected, and what kinds of critical education issues can be explored and solved through data.

Through coursework and practical application, students gain the following skills:

  • Identify various education data sources and analyze and incorporate quantitative information to make stronger arguments in policy briefings, advocacy and communications in other areas.
  • Develop survey instruments and use data collection tools such as Qualtrics to gather primary data for research.
  • Develop data literacy skills to synthesize quantitative information from research papers and reports in education to make informed decisions/recommendations in education practices in both public and private settings.
  • Develop strong quantitative problem solving skills through experiential learning opportunities in education consulting and social entrepreneurship classes.
