Program Description
The undergraduate division of the Department of Mathematics offers a wide variety of courses in both pure and applied mathematics. Faculty are members of the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, which has become a leading research center through its tradition of integrating mathematical theory and applications.
Students who complete any four (4) MATH-UA courses (numbered MATH-UA 120 or higher) are eligible to declare a minor in Mathematics. Students who have a mathematics requirement for their major or joint major must be mindful of not double-counting more than two (2) MATH-UA courses between this minor and their major's program of study. Minor Declaration
To request declaration of a minor, CAS students should visit the host department. To request declaration of a cross-school minor, CAS students should complete the online Minor Application available in their Albert Student Center. Students may also use the Minor Application in Albert to request cancellation of a CAS or cross-school minor.
Program Requirements
The minor requires the completion of any four (4) MATH-UA courses numbered MATH-UA 120 or higher. Courses from the traditional Calculus sequence (MATH-UA 121 Calculus I, MATH-UA 122 Calculus II, MATH-UA 123 Calculus III) and the Mathematics for Economics Sequence (MATH-UA 131 Mathematics for Economics I, MATH-UA 132 Mathematics for Economics II, MATH-UA 133 Mathematics for Economics III) cannot both be applied to the minor in Mathematics. Students must choose one sequence or the other and cannot mix-and-match, combine, or double-count between the Calculus and Mathematics for Economics sequences. Also note that students cannot register simultaneously for separate courses within the two sequences.

Program Policies
Policies Applying to the Minor in Mathematics
- At least two (2) courses for the minor must be MATH-UA courses taken at NYU CAS.
- MATH-UA test credit for up to two (2) courses may be accepted from AP, A Level, IB, etc. test scores.
- MATH-UA transfer course credit for up to two (2) non-NYU courses may be accepted.
- A student who enters NYU with 16+ credits of MATH-UA test and/or transfer course credit must still take at least two (2) MATH-UA courses at NYU CAS.
- Courses from the Calculus sequence (MATH-UA 121 Calculus I, MATH-UA 122 Calculus II, MATH-UA 123 Calculus III) and the Mathematics for Economics sequence (MATH-UA 131 Mathematics for Economics I, MATH-UA 132 Mathematics for Economics II, MATH-UA 133 Mathematics for Economics III) sequence cannot both be applied to this joint minor. Students must take either Calculus I through III or Mathematics for Economics I through III. Note that students are not permitted to combine or double-count between the Calculus and Mathematics for Economics sequences or to register simultaneously for separate courses within the two sequences.
- No credit toward the minor will be awarded for any or all of Mathematics for Economics I, II, III if the student has taken any or all of Calculus I, II, III (or Honors Calculus III).
- No credit toward the minor will be awarded for any or all of Calculus I, II, III (and Honors Calculus III) if the student has taken any or all of Mathematics for Economics I, II, III.
- No credit toward the minor will be awarded for any honors version of a course that a student has already taken the non-honors version of or vice versa.
- Students may double count no more than two (2) MATH-UA courses between a major and/or a second minor (with approval of the other department or program).
- Courses taken under the Pass/Fail option are not counted toward the minor.
- A grade of C or better is required in all courses to count toward the minor.
Required Coursework in CAS (-UA) for all Majors and Minors in Courant
At least half of the courses applied to the Courant requirements of the CAS majors and minors in Computer Science and in Mathematics (including joint programs) must be CSCI-UA and MATH-UA courses taken in New York or at NYU study away sites. This is a built-in limit on how many courses students may take in these subjects that are (for example) sponsored by NYU Abu Dhabi and NYU Shanghai under CS-UH, MATH-UH, CENG-SHU, CSCI-SHU, and MATH-SHU. Internal and external transfers must pay close attention to this policy, but it also applies to students who matriculate as first-years. The usual CAS policies on -UA residency for the baccalaureate degree still apply.
