Program Description

The Chinese language courses offered by the Department of East Asian Studies comprise four levels: Elementary I and II, Intermediate I and II, Advanced I and II, and Post-Advanced. Our curriculum provides a strong foundation for students who intend to pursue graduate study or careers in which knowledge of Chinese is useful or required. Course offerings may vary from semester to semester.

Minor Declaration

To request declaration of a minor, CAS students should visit the host department. To request declaration of a cross-school minor, CAS students should complete the online Minor Application available in their Albert Student Center. Students may also use the Minor Application in Albert to request cancellation of a CAS or cross-school minor.

Program Requirements

The minor requires four Chinese language courses (16 credits) through the Advanced II level.

Policies

Notes Applying to All Minor Tracks

1. Chinese, Japanese, and Korean minors: If Advanced II of the target language is reached prior to fulfilling the 16 credits, fourth-year language courses (i.e., past Advanced II) must be taken to fulfill the remaining credits.
2. At least 8 of the 16 credits must be taken at the NYU New York campus.
3. A grade of C or better is necessary in all courses used to fulfill minor requirements; courses graded Pass/Fail do not count toward the minor.
4. No more than two transfer courses (8 credits) may be accepted toward any minor, subject to review by and approval of the director of undergraduate studies. (This includes courses taken at the NYU portals.) Courses submitted for transfer credit must first be approved by CAS (or the appropriate school); only after such approval can the DUS in East Asian studies make a determination at the departmental level. Please refer to “Policy on Transfer Credits and NYU Shanghai and NYU Abu Dhabi Courses,” below, for additional information.
5. Qualified NYU Shanghai and NYU Abu Dhabi civilization courses count toward the East Asian civilization minor. A list of which courses qualify will be provided every semester on the departmental website. Please refer to “Policy on Transfer Credits and NYU Shanghai and NYU Abu Dhabi Courses,” below, for additional information.
6. No double-counting of courses will be permitted. Courses to be counted toward an EAS minor must be exclusive to that EAS minor, whether or not they are cross-listed with another department.
7. Only the civilization minor (i.e., none of the language minors) can be used to satisfy the Expressive Culture requirement of the College Core Curriculum.

Policy on Transfer Credits and NYU Shanghai and NYU Abu Dhabi Courses

1. Students who enter CAS as freshmen and choose the track in language and civilization may take up to two 4-credit civilization courses (8 credits) and two 4-credit language courses (8 credits) covering East Asia at NYU Shanghai and NYU Abu Dhabi. A list of the pre-approved courses can be found on the department's website. These courses will be applied toward the major or minor for students who earn a C or better; they do not need to be pre-approved or reviewed.
2. Students who enter CAS as freshmen and choose the track in civilization may take up to two 4-credit civilization courses (8 credits) covering East Asia at NYU Shanghai and NYU Abu Dhabi. A list of the pre-approved courses can be found on the department's website. These courses will be applied toward the major or minor for students who earn a C or better; they do not need to be pre-approved or reviewed.
3. Students who enter CAS as transfer students and choose the track in language and civilization may apply up to four 4-credit transfer courses (16 credits) toward the major or two 4-credit transfer courses (8 credits) toward the minor, upon review and approval by the director of undergraduate studies. For the major, no more than 8 credits in civilization and 8 credits in language may be transferred in. They may choose to replace up to 16 of these credits with two 4-credit civilization courses (8 credits) and two 4-credit language courses (8 credits) covering East Asia at NYU Shanghai and NYU Abu Dhabi. A list of the pre-approved courses can be found on the department's website. These Shanghai and Abu Dhabi courses will be applied toward the major or minor for students who earn a C or better; they do not need to be pre-approved or reviewed. The total of transfer credits from other institutions and credits from NYU Shanghai and NYU Abu Dhabi cannot exceed four courses (16 credits) for the major and two courses (8 cred) for the minor. [Transfer students should note that NYU Shanghai and NYU Abu Dhabi courses do not count toward the 64 credits that internal or external transfer students to the College are required to complete in CAS (-UA) courses.]
4. Students who enter CAS as transfer students and choose the track in civilization may apply up to four 4-credit transfer courses (16 credits) in civilization toward the major or two 4-point transfer courses (8 credits) toward the minor, upon review and approval by the director of undergraduate studies. They may choose to replace up to 8 of these credits with two 4-credit civilization courses (8 credits) covering East Asia at NYU Shanghai and NYU Abu Dhabi. A list of the pre-approved courses can be found on the department's website. These Shanghai and Abu Dhabi courses will be applied toward the major or minor for students who earn a C or better; they do not need to be pre-approved or reviewed.
