Advanced Surgery

This is an advanced 4-week elective that seeks to build on surgical knowledge, and experiences gained in the pre-clerkship and clerkship years. It may be used to build upon experience from the 2-week Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Introductory Elective. Students will be expected to serve at the level of a sub-intern. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the core principles, foundational knowledge, and essential skills relevant to the specialty through encounters with a diverse range of cases reflective of this specialty. Students will gain this experience through exposure to the entire spectrum of the specialty including craniofacial surgery, microsurgery, hand surgery, truck and lower extremity reconstruction, breast reconstruction and cosmetic surgery.

This is an introductory 2-week elective that seeks to introduce students to the field of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. As an introductory elective, students will be expected to gain a broad understanding of the core principles, foundational knowledge, and essential skills relevant to the specialty through encounters with a diverse range of cases reflective of this specialty. Students will gain this experience through encounters with a diverse range of cases reflective of this specialty. Students will gain this experience through exposure to the entire spectrum of the specialty including craniofacial surgery, microsurgery, hand surgery, truck and lower extremity reconstruction, breast reconstruction and cosmetic surgery. Clinical research projects are always available for student participation but not required.

This is an introductory 2-week elective that seeks to introduce the student to the field of Hand Surgery. As an introductory elective, the student will gain a deeper understanding of the core principles, foundational knowledge, and essential skills relevant to the specialty through encounters with a diverse range of cases reflective of this specialty. Students will be exposed to operating room procedures, emergency room diagnosis and treatment, outpatient clinical evaluation of patients, care and evaluation of in-house patients and the varying didactic programs of the department. Each student will be assigned a faculty mentor and work on the Plastic Surgery Service at NYU Langone Hospital- Brooklyn.

This is a 2-week or 4-week elective to provide the student with an overview of the field of endocrine surgery. As an introductory elective, the student will gain a broad understanding of the core principles, foundational knowledge, and essential skills relevant to the specialty of endocrine surgery. Students will be introduced to a breadth of clinical experiences, in both the inpatient and outpatient settings, and encounter a diverse range of cases relating to surgical diseases of the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands. Students will also join the departmental housestaff in all departmental didactics, as outlined below.

This is a 2-week or 4-week elective to provide the student with an overview of the field of endocrine surgery. As an introductory elective, the student will gain a broad understanding of the core principles, foundational knowledge, and essential skills relevant to the specialty of endocrine surgery. Students will be introduced to a breadth of clinical experiences, in both the inpatient and outpatient settings, and encounter a diverse range of cases relating to surgical diseases of the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands. Students will also join the departmental housestaff in all departmental didactics, as outlined below.

When rotating through this either 2 week or 4 week elective, you will be exposed to the vast practice of Trauma Surgery. On service, you will see pathology including but not limited to traumatic injuries such as penetrating trauma and blunt trauma, as well as general surgery emergencies such as acute abdomen, including appendicitis, cholecystitis, hernias, abscesses, and others. During the rotation, you will have the opportunity to present patients to the team on rounds, scrub into cases, shadow attendings in clinic, and gain skills in trauma resuscitation and suturing. You will be expected to learn how to perform a proper trauma assessment. The rotation focuses on early and broad exposure to the practice of trauma surgery.

When rotating through this either 2 week or 4 week elective, you will be exposed to the vast practice of Trauma Surgery. On service, you will see pathology including but not limited to traumatic injuries such as penetrating trauma and blunt trauma, as well as general surgery emergencies such as acute abdomen, including appendicitis, cholecystitis, hernias, abscesses, and others. During the rotation, you will have the opportunity to present patients to the team on rounds, scrub into cases, shadow attendings in clinic, and gain skills in trauma resuscitation and suturing. You will be expected to learn how to perform a proper trauma assessment. The rotation focuses on early and broad exposure to the practice of trauma surgery.

This is a 2-week or 4-week elective to provide the student with an overview of the field of general surgery (non-bariatric) with a focus on the minimally invasive approach to a broad spectrum of general surgery conditions including inguinal and ventral hernia, complex incisional hernia, gallbladder disease, diseases of the appendix, and foregut diseases (GERD, hiatal hernia, paraesopahgeal hernia, achalasia, epiphrenic diverticulum, gastroparesis). As an introductory elective, the student will gain a broad understanding of the core principles, foundational knowledge, and essential skills relevant to the treatment of these common diseases. Hernia surgery and foregut surgery are rapidly becoming highly specialized fields in general surgery and our service will give an in-depth exposure to these exciting and fast-growing fields. Students will be introduced to a breadth of clinical experiences, in both the inpatient and outpatient setting, and encounter a diverse range of cases reflective of this specialty. Students will have one on one exposure to patient care with attending preceptors in clinic and will independently evaluate pre and post-operative patients in both the outpatient and inpatient settings.

On service, you will see pathology including but not limited to aortic aneurysms, chronic limb threatening ischemia, deep venous thrombosis, carotid stenosis, hemodialysis access need, mesenteric ischemia, and acute limb ischemia. During the rotation, you will have the opportunity to present patients to the team on rounds, scrub into cases (both endovascular and open surgery), shadow attendings in clinic, and gain skills in ultrasound guided access of vessels. You will be expected to learn how to perform a proper pulse exam and understand anatomy related to the vascular pathology. The rotation focuses on early and broad exposure to the practice of vascular surgery.

When rotating through this either 2-week or 4-week elective, you will be exposed to the vast practice of Vascular Surgery. On service, you will see pathology including but not limited to aortic aneurysms, chronic limb threatening ischemia, deep venous thrombosis, carotid stenosis, hemodialysis access need, mesenteric ischemia, and acute limb ischemia. During the rotation, you will have the opportunity to present patients to the team on rounds, scrub into cases (both endovascular and open surgery), shadow attendings in clinic, and gain skills in ultrasound guided access of vessels. You will be expected to learn how to perform a proper pulse exam and understand anatomy related to the vascular pathology. The rotation focuses on early and broad exposure to the practice of vascular surgery.
