PEDS-MD 4002  Pediatric Cardiology  (4 Credits)

Students are exposed to the entire range of congenital and acquired heart disease in fetuses, infants, children, adolescents, and young adults. The main objective of the elective rotation is to provide the student with a basic understanding of pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of common forms of congenital and pediatric heart disease. Students will attend pediatric cardiology outpatient clinics, participate in teaching rounds, and observe procedures such as diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization, invasive electrophysiology testing, echocardiography, and cardiac surgical procedures. Weekly conferences include an interdisciplinary cardiac catheterization-surgical conference; additional conferences are optional.

PEDS-MD 4004  Pediatric Emergency Medicine  (4 Credits)

Bellevue has recently opened a new Emergency Service, permitting optimal care for our patients in a more spacious, comfortable, efficient and well monitored setting. We see a wide spectrum of pediatric disease and trauma in the Pediatric Emergency Service. Students will function independently, while becoming familiar with history taking and the pediatric physical exam. Under the supervision of the Pediatric Emergency Service attending, they will generate a differential diagnosis and carry out a management plan.

PEDS-MD 4005  Pediatric Endocrinology  (4 Credits)

The aim of the elective will be to allow the student to gain an overview in the diagnosis and management of pediatric endocrine disorders. Students will participate in all clinical activities of the pediatric endocrine service, including tow endocrine clinics weekly, one Diabetes clinic every other week and weekly (1-2/week) private office sessions. The students will be expected to round on all in-patients and perform consultations with the fellows. Attendance at the Friday weekly conference, Research in Progress, Combined Adult/Pediatric Endocrine conferences and Pituitary conference will be required. Topics will be assigned for presentation and discussion. Opportunity for laboratory based and clinical research can be arranged on an individual basis if the student rotates for more than two modules. During the rotation, student will present an article 9once in 4 weeks) at weekly journal club.

PEDS-MD 4006  Pediatric Hematology-Oncology  (4 Credits)

Students will participate in the clinical activities of the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Service, including clinics and outpatient therapy sessions. A full schedule of educational activities is offered: weekly management conferences, weekly morphology reviews, weekly hematology tutorials, tumor boards and journal clubs. Students will participate in joint seminars with the Adult Hematology Service, be assigned new patients for consultation and chronic patients for follow-up and they will also be exposed to the psychosocial aspects of chronic care.

PEDS-MD 4007  Pediatric Infectious Disease  (4 Credits)

Students will work with the Pediatric Infectious Diseases consult service to follow both in- and out-patient cases. They will serve as an active team participant, and, based on their experience and comfort level, will be responsible for their own case load, under the supervision of the fellow and attending. Infectious disease conferences, both adult and pediatric, are also part of the curriculum.

PEDS-MD 4009  Medical Genetics  (4 Credits)

This elective will better acquaint the student with the basic concepts of medical genetics and their application to the evaluation and treatment of human disease. Students will see patients in the prenatal and non-prenatal (pediatric and adult) genetics in our office, outpatient clinics and in the wards at Tisch and Bellevue Hospitals. Students will also participate in the conferences of the Clinical Genetic Services.

PEDS-MD 4013  Pediatric Nephrology-Bh  (4 Credits)

Students will participate in the clinical activities of the Pediatric Nephrology Division, including outpatient clinics, including kidney transplant clinic, and inpatient service consultations. In addition to the clinical experience, a full schedule of educational activities is offered: Weekly management conferences, pathology sessions and one on one pediatric nephrology teaching with the faculty. Students will participate in joint seminars with the Adult Nephrology Service, be assigned new patients for consultation and chronic patients for follow-up and they will also be exposed to the psychosocial aspects of chronic care.

PEDS-MD 4030  Pediatric Gastroenterology  (4 Credits)

Students are exposed to the entire range of congenital and acquired digestive disease in infants, children and young adults. The main objective of the elective rotation is to provide the student with a basic understanding of pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of common forms of GI disease in children. Students will participate in daily teaching rounds, attend pediatric GI outpatient clinics, observe procedures such as diagnostic endoscopy, pH monitoring, and hydrogen breath tests.

PEDS-MD 4034  Pediatric Rheumatology  (4 Credits)

Students will participate in the clinical activities of the Pediatric Rheumatology Service, including outpatient clinics, private office hours, infusion visits and inpatient/emergency room consultations. A full schedule of educational activities is offered: weekly management conferences, weekly rheumatology journal clubs, weekly rheumatology seminar series, weekly pediatric grand rounds, and monthly adult rheumatology grand rounds as well as other conferences, including pediatrics morning report and morbidity and mortality conferences if appropriate. Students will participate in joint seminars with the Adult Rheumatology Service, as indicated above, working closely with the adult fellows in pediatric rheumatology clinic. Students will be assigned new patients for consultation and chronic patients for follow-up focusing on their medical care as well as the psychosocial aspects of chronic disease in children and its affect on the patient and family.

This elective provides an intensive experience with an adolescent population; gives the student an opportunity to work as part of the adolescent health care team and allows the student to participate in several unique clinical programs that include: the Adolescent Perinatal Program, the Norman Thomas High School based clinic, Adolescent mothers and babies clinic, and the Adolescent Gynecology Clinic.

PEDS-MD 4041  Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics  (4 Credits)

Developmental–Behavioral Pediatrics (DBP) is the subspecialty of Pediatrics concerned with the diagnosis/assessment of children and adolescents with suspected developmental disabilities and/or behavioral issues, and the management of affected patients. This elective will acquaint the student with aspects of DBP from a clinical standpoint. Children and adolescents with the following conditions are typically evaluated and managed by DBP: Autism Spectrum Disorder, language delays and disorders, school failure and learning problems, genetic syndromes, ADHD, Intellectual Disability, temperamental variations, externalizing and internalizing conditions, sleep problems, feeding problems, somatoform disorders, elimination problems, and neuromuscular diseases.

PEDS-MD 4044  Pediatric Allergy & Immunology 2-Week  (2 Credits)

This is a 2-week elective focused on Pediatric Allergy and Immunology. It is primarily an outpatient elective, with some inpatient consultations. Students will become familiar with real life application of the hypersensitivity disorders, and learn to distinguish IgE mediated food allergy and non-IgE mediated food allergy. They will also encounter common diagnoses of allergic rhinitis, asthma, atopic dermatitis, urticaria, and learn evaluation and work up of these disorders and primary immunodeficiency. Students will have the opportunity to observe procedures of allergic skin prick testing, oral food challenge, biologic and immunotherapy administration.

PEDS-MD 4045  Pediatric Critical Care Introductory  (2 Credits)

PEDS-MD 4046  Outpatient Ambulatory Care and Advocacy Pediatrics  (2 Credits)

This is a 2-week elective for medical students interested in Pediatrics to get more exposure to outpatient general pediatrics. During this elective, students will have the opportunity to gain further clinical skills, knowledge, and autonomy in the outpatient setting through a wide variety of outpatient pediatric cases while interfacing with pediatricians and interdisciplinary teams at both NYU/Bellevue and throughout the city. Students will also join the departmental house staff in relevant departmental didactics, as outlined below. There will also be the opportunity to review growth and reflect on a unique advocacy topic in Pediatrics with a faculty mentor.

This is a longitudinal teaching elective for medical students with a passion for and interest in teaching and medical education. During the academic year, senior students will provide peer teaching and feedback to junior learners in pediatrics in various settings/forms: orientation workshops teaching on rounds bedside sessions, including H&P and PE direct observation and feedback; clinical reasoning verbal and written feedback on oral presentation and written documentation pediatric pipeline involvement with first years curriculum development including shelf review OSCE teaching support at NYSIM
