Anesthesiology (ANES-MD)

The medical student will gain a broad understanding of acute and chronic pain from the neurophysiological, musculoskeletal, systemic disease, and biopsychosocial perspectives.

This is an advanced 4-week elective that seeks to build on anesthesiology knowledge and experiences gained in the pre-clerkship and clerkship years. It may be used to build upon experience from the 2-week Anesthesiology Introductory Elective.

This is an introductory 2-week elective that seeks to introduce the student to the field of Anesthesiology. As an introductory elective, the student will be expected to gain a broad understanding of the core principles, foundational knowledge, and essential skills relevant to the specialty through encounters with a diverse range of cases reflective of this specialty. Students will gain this experience through an introduction to student preoperative evaluation, intraoperative management and postoperative routine and critical care. Emphasis is placed on scientific foundations of anesthesia, including organ-system pathophysiology, autonomic and anesthetic pharmacology, and hemodynamic monitoring. Morning case conferences and afternoon topical lectures will supplement operating room patient care responsibilities. In the operating room, there is a one-to-one teaching by both anesthesia residents and faculty. The student may elect to do a one-week rotation in a specialty field of anesthesia, e.g., obstetrics, neurosurgery, cardiothoracic or pediatrics. On-call responsibilities at Bellevue Hospital are elective and will be one evening per week during which time the student will work with the Bellevue Team Captain.

This is an introductory 2-week elective that seeks to introduce the student to critical care in the perioperative setting. As an introductory elective, the student will be expected to gain a broad understanding of the core principles, foundational knowledge, and essential skills relevant to the specialty through encounters with a diverse range of cases reflective of this specialty. The students will also learn what it means to be a part of a multidisciplinary team and how to act within the health system as they encounter patients from numerous specialties. Students will gain this experience by following and actively participating in the care of 1-2 ICU patients at a time. Student participation will include pre-rounding on their assigned patients in the morning, presenting patients on rounds in a systems-based approach, and then helping with patient management throughout the day including assisting with any procedures that may be required. Throughout the day, the student will have educational sessions that will address the principles of physiology and critical thinking skills. Education surrounding interpretation of radiology studies, use of ultrasound for diagnosis, and exposure to advanced mechanical circulatory support is expected.
