02/05/2025 CK prepares proposal following NYSED September 2024 outreach re: adding Diagnostic Privilege to eligible programs
02/21/2025 CK finalizes proposal for submission, TW submits to NYSED: Dear Colleagues, Please find attached a program change proposal from New York University for MA Counseling For Mental Health & Wellness (program code 28270) and its related dual degree MA Counseling For Mental Health & Wellness/Adv Cert LGBT Hlth, Education And Social Services (program code 37151). Please note that this change proposal is in response to NYSED's February 23, 2024 memo "Regulations of the Commissioner of Education Relating to Mental Health Practitioners’ Diagnostic Privilege," attached for reference. NYU previously responded to an August 28, 2024 request for Attachment B - Content Chart for the Diagnostic Privilege, which we have also included in this proposal submission. We look forward to hearing from you. Regards, Titilayo
03/06/2025 NYSED responds with feedback, TW confirms receipt: Hello Titilayo, How are you? I am currently reviewing the request to be granted the MHC-D designation for NYU. Some of the courses submitted to meet this requirement are marked as electives, which would not allow this program to receive that MCH-D designation. Additionally could syllabi of these courses be provided for review? Best, Rebecca Rebecca Sanborn, M.A. T. Assistant in Professional Education Professional Education Program Review (PEPR) New York State Education Department
03/10/2025 CK shares feedback and guidance on next steps with EDU: Hi Lindsay, We have heard back from NYSED on the proposal to register MA Counseling For Mental Health & Wellness with diagnostic privilege. NYSED has responded that, as some of the coursework that prepares students for diagnostic privilege is elective coursework, they can not register the program as one that leads to diagnostic privilege. Since there could be graduates of the program who do not take those courses, it would not be correct for the program to receive this designation. If you would like the program to be registered with diagnostic privilege, then all of the relevant coursework (the courses listed in the content chart) would need to be required. Let us know if you would like to go that route and we will update the proposal with NYSED (please also send syllabi for all of the diagnostic privilege courses listed in the content chart). If you would like to keep the program as-is, with the current process that program graduates currently go through to be identified as having diagnostic privilege, then we will withdraw the proposal from NYSED. Please let us know how you would like to proceed.
04/21/2025 CK follows-up to check status with EDU: Hi Lindsay, I hope you're doing well. I'm following up on this message regarding registering the MA Counseling For Mental Health & Wellness with diagnostic privilege. If you would prefer to not move forward with revising the program so that the curriculum aligns to NYSED requirements for registering it with diagnostic privilege, then we will withdraw the proposal. If you are still considering making the necessary changes, please let us know. Warmly, Carina
04/22/2025 Lindsay W confirms they will update the elective per NYSED: Carina, The program would like to revised their curriculum. This will require them to make a course called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy a required course instead of an elective, and will reduce their elective courses from 5 to 4. Please tell me what we need to do to make this change, and if this change could then be effective for Fall 2025. Thanks much, Lindsay
04/23/2025 CK confirms curriculum change: Hi Lindsay, Thank you for confirming that you'd like to move forward with updating the curriculum. We can make that change to the proposal and re-submit to NYSED. As the proposal has already been reviewed by NYSED, we would anticipate that NYSED will respond with approval relatively quickly. I want to confirm that you are changing APSY-GE 2025 Cognitive Behavioral Therapy from elective to required, and that the other elective course (APSY-GE 2611 Brief Psychodynamic Therapy) will remain an elective (as only 12 credits of required coursework are required for diagnostic privilege, it's fine to keep the other elective as an elective - we're just confirming). Warmly, Carina
04/24/2025 Lindsay W confirms course change: Carina, I'm writing to confirm that the program is changing APSY-GE 2025 Cognitive Behavioral Therapy from elective to required, and that the other elective course (APSY-GE 2611 Brief Psychodynamic Therapy) will remain an elective. Thank you for your attention to this. Best, Lindsay
04/25/2025 CK requests syllabi to include in re-submission: Hi Lindsay, Could you please share the syllabi for all the courses listed in the content chart (including the elective)? This is something NYSED indicated they would want to see if we were to re-submit this proposal. Warmly, Carina
05/16/2025 Joyce Yin submits requested syllabi and updated proposal docs: Hello Carina, Please find the following attachments: Diagnostic Privilege Content Chart (Word) Course List (Word) Course Descriptions (Word) Syllabi (PDF) Sincerely, Joyce
05/22/2025 CK finalizes NYSED feedback response; TW submits to NYSED: Hi Rebecca, Thank you again for reviewing this proposal and sharing guidance on what is needed in order for this program to receive the MCH-D designation. Following your guidance, we have revised the program structure to reclassify certain courses from "electives" to required courses. This change is highlighted in yellow within the attached document for your easy reference. Attached you will find the updated Content Chart reflecting this revision, along with the corresponding syllabi. Please let us know if you need anything else to move forward with this proposal review and program registration. Best, Titilayo
07/17/2025 NYSED sends approval; JS sends notification to school in CK absence.
