Jessica Rosenzweig submitted first round documentation: Hi Jesse, Please see the attached required documents that compose our proposed changes to the BS in Business, Technology & Entrepreneurship program at the Undergraduate College in the Stern School of Business. I have also submitted the Non-NYS Authorization form under separate cover as a google form. We did have one question as it relates to some of the proposed changes. Given that we are now giving students the option to take either CSCI-UA 101 & 102 or the TECH-UB 25/26 & TECH-UB 27/28 combinations, can we assume since these courses cover similar material and learning outcomes that they can also be used toward the liberal arts and science requirements given the CSCI-UA courses were being counted in that running tally for this program? Please let me know if we are missing any required items and advise if there are any adjustments, edits, changes and additions we might need to provide as we move forward with this proposal. Thanks so much for your assistance and guidance in this matter. Best,Jessie |

CK requests proposal materials in correct submission format: Hi Jessie, Thank you for submitting the change proposal for the BS in Business, Technology & Entrepreneurship program to OAPRA. Could you please submit all materials except for syllabi as Word document attachments (not through Google Workspace), and submit the syllabi as PDF attachments? This is one of our submission requirements for purposes of version control. We will then assign this proposal to a team member to review and be in touch with any feedback or questions. We'll make a note of your question about the courses mentioned in your email as a part of the proposal review. Warmly, Carina |

CK requests additional materials: Hi Jessie, I hope you're doing well. In the course of reviewing the change proposal materials, we have determined that our review of the changes (and NYSED's review, once the proposal is ready), would benefit from seeing the changes in a sample program schedule (this is a NYSED form that is not always required for program changes; we request it when it is needed to facilitate review). I have attached the sample program schedule template here. Please be sure to fill out all fields in the undergraduate table (note course credits for each course, which courses are new, major, and/or liberal arts, any course prerequisites, term credit totals, and overall credit totals). Please include, for any course where students pick between 2 or 3 options for that one course, all of those options (e.g., CSCI-UA 101 Intro to Computer Science or TECH-UB 25 Intro to Programming & Data Science Using Python + TECH-UB 27 Programming & Algorithms Using Python); for larger course categories such as the functional business core, where students select 3 courses from 6 options, you can either enter a generic category title, e.g., "Functional Business Core Course 1," or enter 3 specific courses from the 6 options. One of the things we are hoping to get a clearer picture of with this table is the liberal arts coursework, so as to ensure all students in the updated curriculum continue to complete the minimum liberal arts coursework required by NYSED for BS programs (60 credits). Once you share the completed table, we will complete our initial review and share our feedback with you. Warmly, Carina |

CK sends proposal feedback to school: Hi Jessie, Thank you for sharing the sample schedule. It was very helpful to see what the program will look like by semester, and to see which courses are identified as LAS. We have completed our initial review of the proposal and would like to share our feedback. There are a number of items that need to be updated in the proposal materials. See below for a summary of our feedback on the proposal materials and see attached documents for specific in-line comments, suggested revisions, and clarifying questions (make sure to view "all markup" to see all revisions). When sending us your updated proposal materials, please make sure to accept or reject our suggested revisions as appropriate, and make sure all comments are addressed (either by making the suggested revision that appears in the comment, or responding to the comment, if appropriate). Summary of proposal feedback: The suggested revisions, additions, and other feedback fall into three key categories: fully articulating and providing a thorough rationale for changes, ensuring consistency across documents (e.g., with course titles and categories, credit amounts, whether new/revised/existing, etc.), and ensuring that the revised curriculum continues to meet NYSED requirements, particularly around the LAS credit minimum for BS programs. Narrative Rationale in the NYSED Change Form: We have added some sections, drafted some language, and indicated where additional changes to the narrative should be considered, so as to clarify some of the details of changes and to provide a more clear rationale for the changes. Please review the suggested revisions to ensure they are accurate or update as needed, and add additional details where indicated. One of the sections we added was re: aligning the BTE program structure with the BS Business structure. This was something we saw was referenced several times in the side-by-side table. It is fine to have this program structure alignment, but the rationale for doing this should focus on the academic rationale for making these changes apply to the BTE program, rather than just noting that the changes are to align the BTE program to the Business program. Side-by-side: We have made a few significant changes to this document. We added headers to separate course categories (core, tech core, entrepreneurship core, general electives, etc.). We made significant revisions to the rationale column to give a full rationale for the changes (please be sure to review these carefully to ensure the rationale we drafted matches the program's intentions). We have also requested that some additional details be added or clarified, e.g., when giving only course numbers, the full titles should be included; and it is not always clear when a course is new to the program or a revised/updated version of a prior course. Please review this document to confirm the suggested revisions are accurate, and make any of the requested updates where indicated in the comments. As a general note for this table, for future reference, you are welcome to adjust some of the formatting to make the curriculum clear, as we did when separating the course categories (since this is a generic template, its format is very basic). LAS Content: As a program that is focused on business and technology, attaining the LAS minimum (60 credits for BS programs) may be more challenging than it might be for a more humanities oriented program. Since the current changes involve both a reduction of the LAS elective credits and to some of the coursework tagged as LAS (some of the LAS courses are now few credits, or offer alternatives that may not qualify as LAS), the program as designed would not meet the 60 credit NYSED minimum. A potential solution to meeting the LAS minimum for the student scenario where they opt for the lower credit or non-LAS option of a course, would be to have an advising process in place at the program/school to advise students to make up the missing LAS credits by using their general elective credits. This would need to be clearly articulated in the proposal. We suggest adding this language to a "notes" section in the sample schedule document. We have added some comments to specific courses noting where additional rationale is needed to support how the LAS requirements are met; the notes section would be where you capture those details. When this program was initially registered in 2019, the proposal (attached) included rationale for two courses to qualify them as LAS. You might use this as a guide if there are courses in the updated program that would require this kind of evidence. Please also note that, though we have only commented on/tagged specific courses that are new or do not match how they were tagged in the 2019 proposal, you might consider looking closely at any of the business or tech related course requirements that are tagged as LAS to make sure they align with NYSED requirements, as NYSED may be enforcing this a bit more strictly now than they did in 2019. This NYSED webpage provides an overview of the types of maths and computer sciences courses that qualify and do not qualify as LAS. Syllabi: All syllabi submitted with program proposals should be in final form and ready for submission to NYSED. We have on the OAPRA website a Syllabi Expectations Tip Sheet that outlines syllabus requirements. Please review all submitted syllabi to ensure that they include all required elements. In particular, the language on integrity of credit was missing from most (MGMT-UB 2 Strategic Management does include this language and is a good example to use). Some syllabi appeared to be in draft or proposal form. Some were missing course objectives and/or basis of grade determination. For the courses where the lecture and lab are combined into one syllabus (e.g., BTEP-UB 1 Fundamentals of Entrepreneurship and BTEP-UB 2 BTE Immersion I) - it is fine to combine them in one syllabus, but when articulating the language on credit integrity, be sure to capture the credit hour calculation as it applies to each part of the course (e.g., if one part is a lecture and one part is a lab, they likely have different credit hour formulas, as lab-type courses typically have students spending more of their time in-lab rather than on supplementary assignments, as they do with lecture courses). Program Requirements Form: Please update as indicated in this document's comments; a few things in this document were unclear or seemed inconsistent with information in other proposal materials. Please let us know if you have any questions about the feedback provided. Please note I will be out next week, but if you send any questions during that time, I will respond as soon as possible when I'm back in office. Warmly,Carina |
