Jessica Rosenzweig submitted first round documentation: Hi Jesse, Please see the attached required documents that compose our proposed changes to the BS in Business, Technology & Entrepreneurship program at the Undergraduate College in the Stern School of Business. I have also submitted the Non-NYS Authorization form under separate cover as a google form. We did have one question as it relates to some of the proposed changes. Given that we are now giving students the option to take either CSCI-UA 101 & 102 or the TECH-UB 25/26 & TECH-UB 27/28 combinations, can we assume since these courses cover similar material and learning outcomes that they can also be used toward the liberal arts and science requirements given the CSCI-UA courses were being counted in that running tally for this program? Please let me know if we are missing any required items and advise if there are any adjustments, edits, changes and additions we might need to provide as we move forward with this proposal. Thanks so much for your assistance and guidance in this matter. Best,Jessie |

CK requests proposal materials in correct submission format: Hi Jessie, Thank you for submitting the change proposal for the BS in Business, Technology & Entrepreneurship program to OAPRA. Could you please submit all materials except for syllabi as Word document attachments (not through Google Workspace), and submit the syllabi as PDF attachments? This is one of our submission requirements for purposes of version control. We will then assign this proposal to a team member to review and be in touch with any feedback or questions. We'll make a note of your question about the courses mentioned in your email as a part of the proposal review. Warmly, Carina |

CK confirms assignment of proposal review with school: Hi Jessie, I'm writing to let you know that this proposal has been assigned to me to review. I will be in touch with feedback or any follow-up questions as I conduct my review. I'll make a note of your question about the courses mentioned in your initial email as a part of the proposal review. Warmly, Carina |

CK requests additional materials: Hi Jessie, I hope you're doing well. In the course of reviewing the change proposal materials, we have determined that our review of the changes (and NYSED's review, once the proposal is ready), would benefit from seeing the changes in a sample program schedule (this is a NYSED form that is not always required for program changes; we request it when it is needed to facilitate review). I have attached the sample program schedule template here. Please be sure to fill out all fields in the undergraduate table (note course credits for each course, which courses are new, major, and/or liberal arts, any course prerequisites, term credit totals, and overall credit totals). Please include, for any course where students pick between 2 or 3 options for that one course, all of those options (e.g., CSCI-UA 101 Intro to Computer Science or TECH-UB 25 Intro to Programming & Data Science Using Python + TECH-UB 27 Programming & Algorithms Using Python); for larger course categories such as the functional business core, where students select 3 courses from 6 options, you can either enter a generic category title, e.g., "Functional Business Core Course 1," or enter 3 specific courses from the 6 options. One of the things we are hoping to get a clearer picture of with this table is the liberal arts coursework, so as to ensure all students in the updated curriculum continue to complete the minimum liberal arts coursework required by NYSED for BS programs (60 credits). Once you share the completed table, we will complete our initial review and share our feedback with you. Warmly, Carina |

CK sends proposal feedback to school: Hi Jessie, Thank you for sharing the sample schedule. It was very helpful to see what the program will look like by semester, and to see which courses are identified as LAS. We have completed our initial review of the proposal and would like to share our feedback. There are a number of items that need to be updated in the proposal materials. See below for a summary of our feedback on the proposal materials and see attached documents for specific in-line comments, suggested revisions, and clarifying questions (make sure to view "all markup" to see all revisions). When sending us your updated proposal materials, please make sure to accept or reject our suggested revisions as appropriate, and make sure all comments are addressed (either by making the suggested revision that appears in the comment, or responding to the comment, if appropriate). Summary of proposal feedback: The suggested revisions, additions, and other feedback fall into three key categories: fully articulating and providing a thorough rationale for changes, ensuring consistency across documents (e.g., with course titles and categories, credit amounts, whether new/revised/existing, etc.), and ensuring that the revised curriculum continues to meet NYSED requirements, particularly around the LAS credit minimum for BS programs. Narrative Rationale in the NYSED Change Form: We have added some sections, drafted some language, and indicated where additional changes to the narrative should be considered, so as to clarify some of the details of changes and to provide a more clear rationale for the changes. Please review the suggested revisions to ensure they are accurate or update as needed, and add additional details where indicated. One of the sections we added was re: aligning the BTE program structure with the BS Business structure. This was something we saw was referenced several times in the side-by-side table. It is fine to have this program structure alignment, but the rationale for doing this should focus on the academic rationale for making these changes apply to the BTE program, rather than just noting that the changes are to align the BTE program to the Business program. Side-by-side: We have made a few significant changes to this document. We added headers to separate course categories (core, tech core, entrepreneurship core, general electives, etc.). We made significant revisions to the rationale column to give a full rationale for the changes (please be sure to review these carefully to ensure the rationale we drafted matches the program's intentions). We have also requested that some additional details be added or clarified, e.g., when giving only course numbers, the full titles should be included; and it is not always clear when a course is new to the program or a revised/updated version of a prior course. Please review this document to confirm the suggested revisions are accurate, and make any of the requested updates where indicated in the comments. As a general note for this table, for future reference, you are welcome to adjust some of the formatting to make the curriculum clear, as we did when separating the course categories (since this is a generic template, its format is very basic). LAS Content: As a program that is focused on business and technology, attaining the LAS minimum (60 credits for BS programs) may be more challenging than it might be for a more humanities oriented program. Since the current changes involve both a reduction of the LAS elective credits and to some of the coursework tagged as LAS (some of the LAS courses are now few credits, or offer alternatives that may not qualify as LAS), the program as designed would not meet the 60 credit NYSED minimum. A potential solution to meeting the LAS minimum for the student scenario where they opt for the lower credit or non-LAS option of a course, would be to have an advising process in place at the program/school to advise students to make up the missing LAS credits by using their general elective credits. This would need to be clearly articulated in the proposal. We suggest adding this language to a "notes" section in the sample schedule document. We have added some comments to specific courses noting where additional rationale is needed to support how the LAS requirements are met; the notes section would be where you capture those details. When this program was initially registered in 2019, the proposal (attached) included rationale for two courses to qualify them as LAS. You might use this as a guide if there are courses in the updated program that would require this kind of evidence. Please also note that, though we have only commented on/tagged specific courses that are new or do not match how they were tagged in the 2019 proposal, you might consider looking closely at any of the business or tech related course requirements that are tagged as LAS to make sure they align with NYSED requirements, as NYSED may be enforcing this a bit more strictly now than they did in 2019. This NYSED webpage provides an overview of the types of maths and computer sciences courses that qualify and do not qualify as LAS. Syllabi: All syllabi submitted with program proposals should be in final form and ready for submission to NYSED. We have on the OAPRA website a Syllabi Expectations Tip Sheet that outlines syllabus requirements. Please review all submitted syllabi to ensure that they include all required elements. In particular, the language on integrity of credit was missing from most (MGMT-UB 2 Strategic Management does include this language and is a good example to use). Some syllabi appeared to be in draft or proposal form. Some were missing course objectives and/or basis of grade determination. For the courses where the lecture and lab are combined into one syllabus (e.g., BTEP-UB 1 Fundamentals of Entrepreneurship and BTEP-UB 2 BTE Immersion I) - it is fine to combine them in one syllabus, but when articulating the language on credit integrity, be sure to capture the credit hour calculation as it applies to each part of the course (e.g., if one part is a lecture and one part is a lab, they likely have different credit hour formulas, as lab-type courses typically have students spending more of their time in-lab rather than on supplementary assignments, as they do with lecture courses). Program Requirements Form: Please update as indicated in this document's comments; a few things in this document were unclear or seemed inconsistent with information in other proposal materials. Please let us know if you have any questions about the feedback provided. Please note I will be out next week, but if you send any questions during that time, I will respond as soon as possible when I'm back in office. Warmly,Carina |

Jessie R sends status update/meeting request: Hi Carina, We have had a chance to review the notes and suggestions you provided and are in the final throes of making the changes and adjustments we can make with the information we have. However, we have some questions we would like to review directly with you/OAPRA hopefully in a meeting, so that we can iron out those outstanding issues and avoid any additional significant back and forth via email. This can hopefully facilitate a more expedited submission to NYSED. We would also ideally use that time to review all the edits and ensure we are all on the same page with all aspects of the proposal. With that in mind, please let us know if any of the following times might work for you for what I think would need to be an hour-long meeting (and whoever else from your team you think would be helpful to be included): Tuesday, 4/29: 2-3pm Friday, 5/2: 10-12pm; 3-5pm Thanks so much in advance. Best, Jessie |

CK responds to Jessie R: Hi Jessie, I'd be happy to meet with you to discuss your questions on the proposal. It would be helpful to have a sense of what you are seeking more clarity on to ensure we're able to clarify as much as possible during the meeting, if you could provide more detail a few days in advance of the meeting, once we set the date. I'll be at a conference the week of 4/28 and unavailable to meet on the dates provided. Here are some options I have open next week and the week of 5/5 for a 1 hour meeting: Wed 4/23: between 2:30pm and 4:30pm Thursday 4/24: between 3 and 4pm Friday 4/25: between 11am and 4pm Tues 5/6: between 1pm and 3pm Wed 5/7: between 10am and 4pm If none of these work for you I can offer additional options further out (or you can share alternatives, as it looks like you are coordinating schedules for the group). |

Jessie R responds to CK message, confirms meeting date: Hi Carina, Apologies for my delay in responding to you with a date that works for us - we have been dealing with registration for the fall term this week and just figuring out scheduling that works for us all from the times you provided. Hoping that Wednesday, 5/7 11:30-12:30pm still works for you. In terms of what we would like to discuss - I think we'd like to review all the documents together to ensure we captured all of your feedback in our updates (and we had a few questions to review in response to some of your comments). In addition, we wanted to just talk a little more about the Liberal Arts and Sciences requirement piece. Thanks so much in advance for taking the time to meet with us. I am happy to send a meeting invite with a Zoom link if that works for you. Best, Jessie |

CK sends followup email after 5/7 consultation: Hi Jessie, It was good meeting with you and your team yesterday re: the BTE change proposal. I wanted to send a quick follow-up on our discussion around LAS. We checked in with KR to get a sense of what Registrar-related processes or initiatives he may have shared with you, and with Titilayo to inquire after any NYU initiatives around LAS. KR noted that, as a part of the new CIM tool that will be rolling out in Fall 2025, there will be the ability for users to tag courses as LAS. These tags would be added by users at the school level, who would be identifying the courses as LAS according to the LAS guidelines from NYSED. There are currently no plans to require programs to undertake historical tagging of all courses - identifying existing courses as LAS is only part of the typical NYSED proposal process, wherein NYSED reviews curricula to ensure they align to NYSED standards and regulations. There are also currently no plans to develop a NYU specific policy around further defining LAS beyond the NYSED guidelines. As I mentioned in our meeting, the NYSED LAS guidelines leave space for programs/institutions to provide rationale for any gray-area courses that may not immediately appear to be LAS, as was done with the original BTE proposal. Let us know if you have any additional questions as you finalize the proposal updates we discussed in the meeting. |
05/08/2025 |
Jessie R asks followup question: Hi Carina, Thank you so much for this information. Was wondering when you indicate: "These tags would be added by users at the school level, who would be identifying the courses as LAS according to the LAS guidelines from NYSED." Would it be the schools identifying from among their own catalog of coursework what they deem to be LAS or would it be that individual schools would add tags to all coursework their students take (including coursework from outside of their school) that they would deem LAS? I am hoping it's the former, as that seems to make more sense, but would love to know for sure. Thanks so much again and we're working on sending along the updated BTE docs shortly. Best wishes, Jessie |

CK provides guidance to Jessie R inquiry: Hi Jessie, Thanks for checking in on that detail. The Registrar side of the CIM implementation team is a better resource for course level details like that, but I suspect, as you do, that it would be the "home" school or department that tags a given course. This might be a good question to bring up at a CIM working group meeting, though as the tool is still in the process of being built out, there may not yet be a lot of specifics available about how it will operate. There will also be opportunities for feedback during user testing. |

Jessie R submits updated proposal, CK confirms receipt: Hi Carina and Jonathan, Thank you for your patience on this - we had to take some time to ensure with the various instructors that all the syllabi were aligned with the required contact hours. Hopefully, we are there, but please do take a look at the attached syllabi and let us know if there seem to be any issues. Attached, please find word versions of the Program Change Proposal documents and PDFs of the syllabi. Hoping that all is in order and we can move forward with submission to NYSED. Please let us know. Best, Jessie |

CK sends request to Jessie R for additional info/updates: Hi Jessie, I hope you're having a good week. We are finalizing our review of the the updated materials; the proposal appears to be in fairly good shape, but we have a few items to confirm before finalizing the proposal for NYSED submission: Global Experience (new requirement): Though this experience may or may not be a credit bearing course, since it is a requirement, it should be included in the program schedule. Can you share what term a typical student might do their Global Experience? We can add it to the sample schedule when we finalize it. Can you confirm that, if the experience is a credit bearing course, it would come out of the student's general elective pool? We will add a note to that effect in the sample schedule. The rationale for adding this requirement needs to be revised - the provided text is just a description of the requirement ("New Stern-wide requirement whereby the number of credits taken to complete it vary based on the chosen pathway to fulfill this requirement." Please share 1-2 sentences that address why has this experience been added to this program (and/or Stern undergrad programs generally) and how do the various experience options support that? We may have a couple of syllabus related items to confirm, but I want to get you this feedback sooner than later so your team can start working on the requested info. Let me know if you have any questions. |

Jessie R responds to CK request for info: Hi Carina, Thanks for this update. Please see below the responses to your questions regarding the global experience requirement: Global Experience (new requirement): Though this experience may or may not be a credit bearing course, since it is a requirement, it should be included in the program schedule. Can you share what term a typical student might do their Global Experience? We can add it to the sample schedule when we finalize it. Can you confirm that, if the experience is a credit bearing course, it would come out of the student's general elective pool? We will add a note to that effect in the sample schedule. I think the easiest way to represent this in the program schedule is to swap out the "Tech elective" for 3 credits that is currently listed in the "spring 3" semester with a 3-credit Stern Around the World travel course which would fulfill the requirement and then have the tech elective moved to where the 3-credit general elective is currently listed in "spring 4". We can then make a note to the effect of: "students can also opt to fulfill the Global Experience Requirement by taking a semester (or Summer, or January term) through an NYU Study Away program in any semester or term that works best with their academic plan. The global experience requirement represents an evolution of the Stern degree and reinforces the importance of the Global Pillar. The new global experiences will provide flexibility and options to explore interesting locations and global business topics. Additional short-term immersion opportunities will allow Stern to be more nimble in responding to global travel challenges. This evolution of the Stern degree recognizes our changing world and ensures every Stern student will graduate with a global academic experience as part of their undergraduate degree. Let me know if this addresses the items you outlined. If you have any updates/edits that need to be made to the syllabi, please send those along so we can take a look at those as well and hopefully turn them around quickly so we can send along the proposal to NYSED ASAP. Thanks so much, Jessie |
06/10/2025 |
CK requests syllabus updates: Hi Jessie, Thank you for providing these details re: the Global Experience requirement. We will add them to the relevant parts of the proposal. There are two syllabi that need updates: BTEP-UB 5 BTE Startup Lab: this course is short of 2250 minute minimum by 10 minutes (this should be an easy fix by reducing the length of the 20 minute break in each 3-hr course meeting - a 19 minute break would put the tota over the minimum by 4 minutes; its ok to exceed the minimum (without exceeding so much you reach another level of credits), but the minimum must always be met) MGMT-UB 2 Strategic Management: missing the grading scale (90-100, 80-90, etc.); All other updated syllabi were updated to include this, so this may have been an oversight when your team was making updates to the syllabi. Once you send these updated syllabi, we can send the proposal to NYSED. Warmly, Carina |
06/11/2025 |
Jessie sends 1 of 2 requested syllabi: Hi Carina, Thanks for getting back to us. Attached, please find an updated version of the BTEP-UB 5 syllabus with the suggested changes. We are going to reach out to the Management department for the necessary information required for the MGMT-UB 2 syllabus and will send that as soon as possible. Best, Jessie |
06/11/2025 |
CK requests additional info for proposal: Hi Jessie, Thanks for sending this updated syllabus, this one looks good. I'll keep an eye out for the other syllabus. One last question, as we finalize the remaining materials. Will the updated curriculum be optional for currently enrolled students, or required? The language in the proposal is not clear on this. We understand that a certain amount of these changes have already been implemented (since incremental changes up to 40 credits of coursework can be made to a Bachelor's program, before having to notify NYSED), so in practice this may not be much of an issue, but we do want to make sure we capture this detail accurately on the record with NYSED. NYSED doesn't have a requirement one way or another on this (whether optional or required for students), but expects that there be a plan in place at the institution/school, so as to ensure students are supported through the changes. Warmly, Carina |
06/13/2025 |
Jessie shares requested info: Hi Carina, We are still awaiting the updated version of that final syllabus, but in the meantime, please see below, our response regarding how we will implement the updated curriculum as an option for our continuing students in the BTE Program: We will provide continuing students the option to pursue new requirements or continue with the coursework as originally outlined when they were admitted. They will have the option to complete equivalent coursework that is introduced through these curricular updates. We have a robust advising team dedicated to assisting students in the program and they will help to ensure each student is made aware of their options as these changes are implemented and enforced moving forward. Please let us know if you think this is sufficient or if we need to edit/add to it at all. Hoping to have that final syllabus to you by early next week. Have a nice weekend, Jessie |

Jessies shares second requests syllabus: Hi Carina, Please see the attached updated version of the MGMT-UB 2 syllabus. Hoping this is everything you need to move forward with submitting to NYSED. Please let me know if you need anything else from our end for the time being. Best, Jessie |
