Allan Corns submits change proposal: Please find side by side comparison and NYSED change form for the PhD in Neural Science. This is an incredibly minor change that will not affect assessment in any way nor does it make changes that would affect the curriculum sheet as it is laid out so I did not include either. I believe the department has done the Non-NYS form but let me know if that is not the case

CK confirms proposal review assignment with GSAS
01/07/2025
CK requests updated side by side table and clarity on proposed curriculum before initial review can be completed: Hi Allan, I hope you are well. In the course of reviewing the proposal for changes to the PhD Neural Science program, it appears that the submitted side-by-side document does not show the correct current curriculum for the current program (the left side of the side-by-side). The "current" program should show what is currently registered with NYSED. The last registration action for this program was in 2018 (for a course change). That proposal is attached here for your reference. The notable difference between the last registered curriculum and the "current" curriculum as it appears in the submitted side-by-side is that the submitted side-by-side includes the course that was replaced in 2018 (BMSC-GA 2001 Foundations of Cell and Molecular Biology was replaced by BMSC-GA 4485 Molecular Neurobiology). In addition, the language around course options for "a course in biostatistics" includes an additional course that did not appear in the 2018 registered curriculum. In addition, we noted some differences between the curriculum in the current Bulletin and in the side-by-side and want to make sure the side-by-side is fully capturing the curriculum changes for this program. The notable differences between the Bulletin and the side-by-side are: the course that was replaced in 2018 appears to have been replaced again: instead of BMSC-GA 4485 Molecular Neurobiology there is BMSC-GA 2001 Topics in Molecular Biology. the course category of "A course in Biostatistics" appears to have been replaced by a specific course (BIOL-GA 2030 Statistics in Biology), with the option to replace it under advisement. In order to continue our proposal review, could you please submit an an updated side-by-side to: reflect the last registered curriculum details on the current/left side update or confirm the proposed changes on the proposed/right side to incorporate the above noted curriculum as it appears in the Bulletin, if those are part of the desired curriculum updates (if the proposed changes that appear in the previously submitted side-by-side do reflect all of the desired curricular updates, please just confirm they are correct and that the Bulletin will be updated accordingly once the proposed changes are registered; we are noting this issue and confirming the updated curriculum because it appears that the above noted updates have already been made to the curriculum but have not been registered with NYSED, so we want to make sure to capture everything in this proposal. As a reminder, all curricular changes to doctoral programs must be approved by NYSED prior to implementation). Once you submit the updates, the remainder of the proposal review should go relatively quickly as we are already familiar with the proposal. Warmly, Carina

Allan shares updated side by side table and clarity on curriculum: I have corrected for the error with BMSC-GA 2001. The other issue about a course in Biostatistics is explained in the first paragraph after the course listing. It is consistent with the bulletin, just gives a couple more potential alternate courses (footnote 2 in bulletin)

CK discusses proposal w/TW, finalizes to send to GSAS
02/11/2025
CK sends Allan Corns feedback on proposal: Hi Allan, I hope you're having a good week. We appreciate your/GSAS's patience in awaiting our proposal review. We review all proposals thoroughly, but take a bit extra care with PhD proposals, as NYSED often scrutinizes those a bit more closely. They will also sometimes check the Bulletin to confirm that curriculum details align with the last registered curriculum when applicable (e.g., for PhD programs, all curriculum changes must be approved by NYSED before being implemented, so they might check to confirm that Bulletin matches the last registered curriculum). With that in mind, we have made some suggested revisions to the side-by-side table and to the NYSED form description of changes. Below is a brief list of the suggested changes we made. Please review the documents and, if the suggested revisions align with the program as it's intended, then accept the changes; if the revisions do not align, then please update the copy to reflect reality. If all revisions are accepted, then we can send the proposal on to NYSED once we receive the final version back from you. Suggested revisions to side by side: Added back some of the course categories that appeared in the 2018 change proposal (and other relevant descriptors), as there are some references to these categories but no other way to identify what they are. This will make it easier to see where the impacted 3 credits are moving from and to. FYI, you do not need to update the Bulletin to match these categories, it is fine to use them for internal/administrative purposes. Added back the description of general electives that appeared in the 2018 proposal, on the left side. Added an updated description of general electives on the right side which includes the level of detail that appears in the current Bulletin. Highlighted the changing credits so the reviewer can easily see where the change is. Suggested revisions to the NYSED form description of changes: Updated to detail the current structure of the program and to clearly spell out what is changing. The language used here aligns with the course categories as they appear in the side by side table. Let us know if you have any questions.
