09/03/2024 Proposal review assigned to CK.
09/11/2024 CK & TW determine a consultation is needed to revise the proposal: CK reaches out to school to schedule meeting to discuss proposal issues (once scheduled, add to CK + TW agenda to discuss/prepare for mtg): Hi Christina, I hope you're having a good week. I'm reaching out to schedule a 30 minute meeting to discuss this proposal. As we started to review, we noticed some additional changes to the program and some issues in the proposal document that we'd like to go over with you. Please let me know if any of these times work for you (if anyone else involved in preparing this proposal should join the meeting, please include their availability and let me know their name so I can include them on the calendar invite): Tuesday 9/17: 2pm, 2:15pm, 4:15pm Wednesday 9/18: 2pm, 2:15pm, Thursday 9/19: 2:15pm, 4:15pm Monday 9/23: 3:15pm, 3:30pm, 3:45pm If none of these work, I can offer some additional options further out. Warmly, Carina
09/18/2024 K & TW meet w/Paula G and Christina L to discuss proposal issues; CK sends follow-up email with guidance: Hi Christina and Paula, Thank you for meeting with us this afternoon to discuss moving forward the MBA Business change proposal. Below is an overview of our feedback. The attached side-by-side document includes more detailed feedback and suggested revisions. We made some updates following our meeting today to capture some of what was discussed. Forms that need to be updated/completed and submitted to OAPRA to review the full proposal package: NYSED general change form: Include a narrative describing the curriculum changes (you can provide an overview of the changes in the narrative and give details in the side by side, but you're also welcome to provide details in both places) Include a narrative describing the title change (some or all of this can be from the previously submitted title change form); title change should cover the request/rationale to remove the inactive Entertainment concentration Sample program schedule to show how a typical student will move through the updated version of the program (see page 8 of the attached new program proposal for NYSED's schedule format); please fill out all applicable fields (academic calendar type, terms, course umber & title, number of credits, if course is new, any prerequisites, term credit totals, program credit total, details on capstone) Course descriptions for any courses revised from the 2016 curriculum and any courses added to the program since 2016. There is no template for this, please submit a document that includes the course number, title, and description of all revised and new courses. It may be useful to include descriptions of 4-5 potential electives (please create a separate section for electives if including them). Side-by-side comparison: see attached for detailed feedback. Please make sure your updates address all comments/suggested revisions. Please update anything that we revised that doesn't align with how the new version program appears. I left the Bulletin column in for your reference, but you may remove it if it's distracting (it won't appear in the NYSED submission). When making updates, please make sure to keep any revised courses or new courses replacing old courses on the same line for side by side comparison; any new courses that don't have an analog in the original curriculum should appear on a new line at the end of the curriculum list. Graduate course curriculum form: please submit an updated version that captures the updates we discussed today (e.g., removing the "industry" and "skill" course options. updating the capstone info) We hope the meeting and this feedback is helpful for you in preparing the change proposal. If you find that you need additional guidance as you work on the proposal, please don't hesitate to reach out. Warmly, Carina
10/25/2024 Christina Lev submits proposal via Google docs: Hi Titilayo and Carina, Thank you again for meeting with us and going through the documents. We've taken your feedback and filled out the additional forms. I think we are in a good place with it and were able to incorporate all of the points you made. Please tell us what you think. L&R Course Descriptions - we included additional electives at the end of this document. We can remove them too if you feel it is too much. L&R NYSED General Change Form L&R NYSED Graduate Course Curriculum Form L&R NYSED Side by Side Form L&R NYSED Title Change Form L&R Sample Program Schedule Best regards, Christina
10/28/2024 CK requests proposal in Word format, Christina sends: Dear Christina, Thank you for submitting the updated proposal. Would you be so kind as to submit these documents in Word format rather than as Google docs? This is one of our proposal submission guidelines that appears on the OAPRA website. As you are not a school liaison you may not be as familiar with OAPRA processes, here is a link to the OAPRA web page detailing the process for Masters program proposals, if you would like to learn more about what's involved in the proposal process. Warmly, Carina
12/09/2024 Paula G requests status update: Carina, I hope all is well. Just checking in to see if we have any updates to share please. Thank you! Paula
12/09/2024 CK provides status update: Good morning Paula, Thank you for reaching out to follow up on the status of the MBA Business (new title: luxury and Retail) proposal. Our team has had an exceptionally busy fall semester, between numerous proposal submissions and other large scale, time sensitive projects, so we have not yet prepared feedback for you on this version of the proposal. We hope to get feedback to you asap, ideally before the winter break, but will let you know if we will not be able to do so. Warmly, Carina
12/17/2024 CK completes initial review, pings TW: I have completed my review of the proposal. Here is your TW Edits folder. To re-orient you to this proposal: it originated as a title change only, was not approved by NYSED so we are re-submitting as program change. We met with Paula & Christina in mid Sept to provide proposal guidance, after they initially submitted an insufficiently completed proposal docs. My main comments on the proposal are below: FYI they included the title change form again though it is not necessary. Aside from them noting no placeholder needed, the form is not helpful (only includes the catalog description, no title change rationale). NYSED change form: The change rationale in the submitted proposal was minimal; I significantly revised it (as we already met with Stern re: how to complete the proposal, it seemed best to just go forward with drafting language, and consider for the future how to direct this and other schools who do not frequently submit proposals and may need more coaching on what their responsibility is in proposal completion). They do some comparison/contrast with their MBA General Management; I give guidance to instead compare the MBA Luxury & Retail with the MBA Business that it's replacing. They note a placeholder isn't needed but we should confirm (and/or guide as necessary to have one) They need to confirm whether the title is Luxury Retail or Luxury & Retail (appears both ways in NYSED forms) Side by side: needs rationale for new and removed courses; need to confirm suggested language for revised courses.
12/20/2024 CK shares status update: Hi Paula, I wanted to share a status update with you on this proposal review prior to the break. Though we won't be able to share proposal feedback with you before the break, the review is in process and we should be able to send you feedback in early January and finalize for NYSED submission shortly thereafter, once all feedback is addressed. Warm wishes for a restful holiday break! Warmly, Carina
02/05/2025 TW completes review, CK & TW discuss next steps.
02/13/2025 CK finalizes initial review and feedback, sends to Stern: Hi Paula, Thank you for your patience as we reviewed and prepared guidance for you on the MBA Business (proposed MBA Luxury & Retail) change proposal. See below for a summary of our feedback on the proposal materials and see attached documents for specific in-line comments, suggested revisions, and clarifying questions. When sending us your updated proposal materials, please make sure to accept or reject our suggested revisions as appropriate, and make sure all comments are addressed (either by making the suggested revision that appears in the comment, or responding to the comment, if appropriate). Summary of proposal feedback: Change rationale: We significantly revised this section to illustrate the evolution of the program and to make the changes more clear for the NYSED reviewer to track. Please review carefully to ensure that the drafted copy aligns with how this program was originally conceived, how it has operated, and how it is proposed to operate. Update as appropriate. Side-by-side curriculum: This was a great draft to help us follow the program changes. We've revised some of the change rationale to make it clearer, updated some of the formatting so that it's easier to see how the original compares with the proposed (e.g., combined the two separate concentration sections, industry and function/skill, to match how the courses kept from each of these categories now appear under one category, the luxury retail core), and have noted a few places that need additional info (e.g., rationale for removed and added courses). As much as possible, we have included draft language to support you in completing the requested updates. Course descriptions: This is mostly in good shape; we added course category headings (e.g., business core, luxury & retail core). Program Schedule: This is in good shape; we added an explanatory note for NYU's summer term structure to facilitate NYSED review, as NYSED won't immediately know that level of detail. Graduate course curriculum form: This is mostly in good shape. If the program is housed in a department, please add the department name. If not, enter "N/A." There are a few courses marked as new or revised in this document that don't match how they are identified in the side by side document. Can you update this and/or the side by side table to ensure that all proposal materials are identifying the curricular revisions in the same way? Please let us know if you have any questions. Warmly, Carina
02/27/2025 Christina Lev submits updated proposal materials: Hi Carina, Thank you for all of the detail and time you poured into these documents. We really appreciate it. It made the revisions much easier to go through. We've updated the docs based on your notes and completed all of the track change assignments. We did have a question from the comment in the General Change Form: Please note that the stand-alone program title change form is required only when ONLY the title is changing. Based on this, I think we do not need to submit the Title Change form since we have other updates? I've included it just in case but if we do not, please discard it. Best regards, Christina
02/27/2025 CK confirms receipt of materials and that title change form not needed: Hi Christina, Thank you for submitting updated proposal documents. We'll review the updates and let you know if we have any additional questions or feedback before submitting to NYSED. Also confirming that we do not need the title change form for this change proposal (the title change form is only used when only the title is changing). Warmly, Carina
03/05/2025 CK sends OAPRA feedback: Hi Christina, I hope you're having a good week. We have reviewed the updated proposal materials. It looks like most items have been addressed, but we still have some questions about the changes to the culminating experience (apologies if our previous guidance/questions around this were unclear). Attached is a document that includes the most recently submitted version of the change narrative for the culminating experience and several clarifying questions, plus some reminders about NYSED standards/expectations for culminating experiences. Please respond to each question in that document and make any updates to the change narrative (with tracked changes on so we can see the updates). If there are impacts to other proposal materials (e.g., the course descriptions doc), please send updated versions of those when you submit this document. Please also submit the current syllabi for COR2-GB 3111 Professional & Corporate Social Responsibility and INTA-GB 2000 Professional Practicum to give us a full picture of what is taking place in each of those courses; this will help us in supporting you to clearly articulate the updated program's culminating experience. Warmly, Carina
03/10/2025 Christina Lev sends updated proposal: Hi Carina, The committee met to review your questions extensively and felt that you brought up some very good points about the culminating project and what it means to this program. After further review they felt that the original submission of the two projects should stand as their culminating project. Thus, we have updated the two documents that reference this to include both Solutions courses. Best, Christina
03/11/2025 CK confirms receipt of updated proposal: Hi Christina, Thank you for sharing that information about the culminating experience and the updated proposal documents. We will review and let you know if we have any additional feedback or questions before we submit the proposal to NYSED. Warmly, Carina
04/02/2025 CK finalizes proposal; TW submits proposal to NYSED: Dear Colleagues, Please find attached a program change proposal from New York University for the MBA Business. We look forward to hearing from you. Regards, Titilayo
05/02/2025 Ellen Stevens (NYSED OCUE) sends feedback/inquiry re: discontinuing concentration: The Office of College and University Evaluation at the New York State Education Department has completed an initial review of New York University’s proposal for a change to the MBA in Business (SED Program# 38624). More information is needed to continue our review of this proposal: The University has indicated that the Education & Media concentration, a registered component of the original Business MBA program, “is not active.” If the University is no longer offering this option, the elimination of this concentration will be registered as part of the curricular changes proposed for the program in accordance with Section 53.3(d) of Commissioner's Regulations which requires that “…instructional programs of the institution shall be accurately described.” Please confirm that no students are currently enrolled in the concentration and that the option is no longer being offered. We ask that the above issues be addressed within 30 business days (Monday, June 16, 2025). Responses may be returned to me by email. The Department will deny registration of the proposed action (pursuant to §52.1(l) of Commissioner’s Regulations) if a satisfactory response is not provided within 30 days. The application will not be retained. If the Department denies registration, a new proposal may be submitted at a later date when compliance with all standards can be demonstrated. Sincerely, Ellen _____________________________________________ Ellen Stevens, Associate in Higher Education New York State Education Department Office of College and University Evaluation
05/05/2025 CK sends NYSED inquiry to Stern: Hi Christina and Paula, NYSED has reached out to confirm a detail for the MBA Business (new title: Luxury & Retail) change proposal. The proposal details the evolution of the program as originating with 3 concentrations, one of which became its own program (Technology and Entrepreneurship), one of which is no longer being offered (Entertainment & Media), and the remaining concentration being the one that the program will be entirely dedicated to (Luxury & Retail). NYSED would like to confirm that we would like to discontinue the Entertainment & Media concentration, when updating the MBA Business program to be MBA Luxury & Retail (though this detail may be implicit in the proposal, NYSED is being diligent in confirming before discontinuing a registered concentration. Can you please confirm that you would like to discontinue the Entertainment & Media concentration? Please confirm that no students are currently enrolled in the concentration. NYSED gave no other feedback, so we are hoping that they will have a final response for us soon after we confirm this detail. Warmly, Carina
05/05/2025 Paula Goldfarb responds to inquiry: Carina, This is such great news!! Thank you. We are not certain yet if we plan to offer the Entertainment & Media option. We did not enroll students in this concentration yet. But, it might be something we consider in the near future. We would prefer to keep it active for a little bit longer if it's possible. Best, Paula
05/07/2025 CK provides guidance re: discontinuing inactive concentration: Hi Paula, Thanks for the quick response. In order to retain the Entertainment & Media concentration, the curricular structure would need to be such that students would be able to complete this (or any other concentration); the current proposal has been revised such that the curriculum structure is specific to the Luxury & Retail curriculum, and no longer matches the MBA Business curriculum that allowed for pursuit of one of three concentrations. If you'd like to go forward with creating a curricular structure that would allow for the potential future inclusion of the existing (but inactive) Entertainment & Media concentration (and potentially the addition of other concentrations, if you choose), then we will need to withdraw this proposal and submit a new proposal with the revised curriculum. We recommend discontinuing the Entertainment & Media concentration now as the simplest solution, as it would be easier to add it later (with any related changes to the curricular structure) than to retain it now. Please let me know if you have any questions. Warmly, Carina
05/07/2025 Paula Goldfarb confirms concentration discontinuance: Hi Carina, We will move forward as you recommend and we want to keep this moving forward quickly. Thank you for letting us know. We will discontinue Entertainment & Media for now. Best, Paul
05/08/2025 TW responds to Ellen Stevens confirming discontinuing inactive concentration: Ellen, Thank you for reaching out to confirm this detail. Please proceed with the elimination of the registered Entertainment & Media concentration. We confirm that no students are currently enrolled in the concentration and that the option is no longer being offered. Please let us know if you require any further information or have additional questions as you continue your review of our proposal. All the best, Titilayo
05/09/2025 NYSED sends approval notification: Dear President Mills: Please maintain this registration email in your records for this proposal as it reflects the official registration action taken by the New York State Education Department. This email is in response to the application for changes to the following registered program at New York University (SED Proposal # 2025-0414): Program Title: Business Award: MBA Program Code: 38624 We are pleased to inform you that on the basis of our review the requested changes have been approved as detailed in this email and on the Inventory of Registered Programs. Proposal Request(s): Curricular Change, Title Change New Title: Luxury & Retail Sincerely, New York State Education Department Office of College and University Evaluation 89 Washington Avenue, Room 960 EBA Albany, NY 12234
05/09/2025 CK sends informal approval notification to Stern, confirms details: Hi Paula and Christina, Some very good news for you going into the weekend, if you're still online - we just received the NYSED approval notification for the changes to the MBA Business (new title: MBA Luxury & Retail). I'll send formal notifications to relevant stakeholders first thing Monday morning. Confirming two things: The changes (including title) are for immediate implementation Can you please confirm the name of the department in which this program is housed (or let me know if it is not housed in a department - this is a detail for the curriculum requirements form that the registrar uses to make updates) Warmly, Carina
05/09/2025 Paula responds, asks followup question: This is such great news! Thank you very much. 1., When you say it will be implemented immediately, what exactly does this mean please? 2. It's not housed in an academic department but within our MBA and Grad Programs area. Not sure if that answers your question!
05/12/2025 CK provides guidance for Paula inquiry: Hi Paula, Thanks for confirming that this program isn't associated with a "department" (many schools do have departments so there is a space in the program requirements form to indicate the department). In the proposal, the language used for implementation timeline was "We would like to implement the program changes immediately following NYSED approval." We are seeking to confirm that you still plan on implementing the changes immediately (e.g., to the next published Bulletin, to the Stern website, to marketing and admissions materials, etc.), or if you plan to hold off to a later time (e.g., if you would like to wait until Fall 2026 to implement - I think not likely for this program, but it's something that could happen with other programs/schools). This is to give OAPRA, and any of the relevant stakeholders in university offices, a sense of timeline for any relevant actions they might need to take for the updated program. Let me know if that clarifies things for you, or if you have any additional questions. Warmly, Carina
05/12/2025 Paula checks with team, confirms launch date: Hi Carina, We would like to move forward with the change now. Thank you! Paula
05/13/2025 CK sends formal approval notifications to relevant university stakeholders.
