During initial review, CK notes that many requested changes are already implemented; emails Joyce Yin for rationale: Hi Joyce, I hope you're well. We're in the process of reviewing Steinhardt's proposal for program changes to the MA Music Therapists program. In the course of our review, we found some discrepancies between the proposal and the information in the program's Bulletin entry and webpage. It appears that the curriculum that's marked in the proposal as new/proposed already appears in the Bulletin and program website, and the new title is in use on the program webpage. Can you please let us know how long each of these changes has been in effect (it looks like most of the changes were already in effect in the 21-23 Steinhardt Bulletin, we haven't looked further back than that)? It's very likely that NYSED will look at the Bulletin and program webpage when they review the proposal (they may not review these resources for all proposals, but licensure qualifying programs receive extra scrutiny). Joyce & Lindsay respond to request for rationale: Carina, We have requested our web team to fix the official degree title on the program's website to reflect the NYSED approved title of Music Therapists, while we wait for NYSED approval of a new title. You are correct that the program has already implemented the changes they are proposing. They made these changes in anticipation of submitting their self study for re-accreditation in 2020-21 in response to changes in the music therapy field and student demand. Many of those changes were a direct outcome of calls for social justice and greater cross-cultural awareness following the death of George Floyd. We fully expected to submit those changes first to NYSED for approval, but at around the same time their senior faculty member retired, leaving a single full-time faculty member, who was about to go on sabbatical, with no time to move forward with a submission to NYSED. Covid complicated things further, with the extra pressures on faculty to oversee and manage clinical placements disrupted by Covid as well as the shift to online teaching, which was stressful. NASM's National Office then postponed the on-site review of New York University from the 2020-2021 to the 2022-2023 academic year, which further dragged out work on data collection and the self study. The faculty decided in late 2020 to go ahead with the curricular changes, effective for Fall 2021, knowing how important they were both to the integrity of the program and training of therapists, and to the success of their re-accreditation efforts. They didn't want to wait three more years before improving the curriculum. The program submitted its self study in March 2023; the site visit was April 2023. CK requests additional syllabi needed for proposal submission, Joyce confirms they will send next week: Hi Joyce, I hope you're having a good week. In putting together the proposal package to submit to NYSED, I caught something that we previously missed. In the Creative Arts Therapy Licensure-Qualifying Curriculum Content Areas document, there's a note that the syllabi for the listed courses should be included. It looks like we are missing several of those syllabi (possibly because you may have been referring to the generic licensure program change application where they specify a need only for new and revised syllabi). In the attached document, the courses highlighted in gray are the syllabi we already have. Can you please send the remaining syllabi when you have a moment? If you need a bit of time to make some updates to the syllabi so they are in alignment with syllabus requirements, let us know. We can submit the proposal as soon as we receive the syllabi and confirm they are in alignment with NYSED standards. |
