Sangeeta Bhojwani of Stern reaches out, requesting update on proposal review |
09/05/2023 |
AF responds: Thank you for getting in touch. We will respond to your proposal shortly. NYSED recently had some turnover with reviewers and we are managing some new feedback dynamics. We are navigating this and are assessing whether we need to adjust some of our recommendations on these proposals, including yours. Thank you for your patience. |

Sangeeta reaches out to OAPRA, requesting status update on proposal review |
10/04/2023 |
AF reaches out to Stern w/ feedback: Dear All, Thank you so much for your patience! My colleague Jesse Stayton (cc'd) and I have reviewed this proposal and I have attached the revised proposal documents with comments for your review. I think that the necessary clarifications and revisions are fairly minor. The only more substantive piece is to provide an appendix that lists the requirements for the college core and functional business core, as well as descriptions for the Liberal Arts Electives and General Electives as to what will qualify in these categories. Please also confirm whether the Real Estate Primary Markets and Real Estate Capital Markets courses are new to NYU (not just new to the program). Please let me know if you have any questions. |

Sangeeta responds, confirming receipt. Stern will review OAPRA feedback and circle back |

JS reviews revised Stern documents, reaches out to TW: Hi Titilayo, I am writing to update that I have reviewed the revised documents sent by Stern (see here for round 2 documents) for the BS Business program change, which is the addition of a concentration in Real Estate. As you will see in Alex’s email, the changes to be made were pretty straightforward. Namely: Confirming no courses were new to NYU - this has been completed. Adding language to define what separates liberal arts electives from unrestricted “free” electives - this has been completed. Detailing the college core and functional core courses via an appendix on the side-by-side - this has been completed. This appears to be ready for submission, although I do have a couple clarifying questions/comments: In the side-by-side, Jessie has added a comment re: a change to the capstone that occurred after the last NYSED registration. This is not a change that is part of this proposal - does this information need to be included? Sangeeta has added a comment in the NYSED proposal form to request a change in the CIP code. I will remove this comment before submission as it is not part of the NYSED change process. I can follow up with Sangeeta to advise her to reach out to the registrar for CIP changes, emphasizing that CIP codes belong to programs, not concentrations. |
12/14/2023 |
TW responds: Dear Jesse, Thank you for this thorough update. Please remind Jessie that any change to a capstone must be approved by NYSED prior to implementation. They will need to include this change in their proposal. Thank you for reminding Sangeeta that CIP codes do not go to NYSED. In many cases, CIP Code change requests should go to the NYU CIP Code committee, to which I am part of. Since the request is part of a program change, I can do an initial review to determine if this should go to the committee. Can you review the new CIP code and send me the title and definition. Also, please describe whether or not the changes proposed in the proposal warrant the request for the new CIP Code, so that I can review. I don't see the curricular requirements form in the folder you shared, can you send it to me? If they didn't submit one, please let me know. |
12/14/2023 |
JS responds: Hi Titilayo, thank you for your clarifying email! I will draft a response to Stern, indicating that the capstone change needs to be completed, and the reminder on CIP codes. On that note: Stern has selected the 52.1301 code, "Management Science." In the curricular requirements form (see here, apologies for not sending), they include the following justification: "The National Center of Education Statistics defines Management Science as 'a general program that focuses on the application of statistical modeling, data warehousing, data mining, programming, forecasting and operations research techniques to the analysis of problems of business organization and performance.' Given the quantitative and analytical nature of the required and elective courses in both the business core and this concentration, and their applicability to solving general business problems, albeit applied in a real estate context in some of the courses, Management Science is the most natural CIP code." The argument could be made, when looking at the course descriptions for the real estate courses, that there is coursework that is indeed quantitative/analytical in nature. However, to my knowledge CIP codes are assigned to programs (i.e. the BS Business), not individual concentrations. Best, |

JS reaches out to Stern w/ language approved by TW: Hi all, Thanks so much for your patience while we have been reviewing the latest round of revisions for the BS Business. I have completed the review - it looks like the feedback we provided was incorporated, so we are in good shape! I do have one additional edit to be made. In the side-by-side, there is a reference to a capstone change that was made after the last registration with NYSED. Please note: any change to a capstone must be approved by NYSED prior to implementation. Therefore, the capstone change will need to be included as a proposed change in the documents before submitting to NYSED. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you. |
12/14/2023 |
Jessie Rosenzweig of Stern responds: "Hi Jesse, Thanks so much. To confirm re. the capstone, does that mean that we need to supply the syllabus along with information about all of the instructors who are teaching the course? Is there any additional information we would need to supply?" |
12/14/2023 |
JS responds: Hi Jessie, Yes, please send the syllabus for the new capstone. In addition, the NYSED program change form should mention the change to the capstone: there should be language that addresses a) details of what the proposed changes are, and b) the rationale/justification behind the changes. Please let me know if you have any additional questions. Thanks! |
12/14/2023 |
TW reaches out to Stern re: CIP codes: Dear Stern Colleagues, I wanted to follow-up regarding this proposal regarding the concentration CIP Code change request included in your proposal. We removed all language referencing CIP Codes since those are managed at the institution level. Please note: Stern would need to be prepared to submit a new program proposal to NYSED if you feel there is a discrepancy between the current CIP code and the proposed changes. If you elect to leave the CIP code as is, then the current CIP Code will remain the same. |

01/16/2024 |
@Titilayo Weech I have completed my review of the revisions sent by Sangeeta - the added language/rationale for the capstone change in the NYSED form appears fine to me, please see here for folder: https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/folders/14_4MeaULSWf0G7EwvgpEim2RU2RNO1Hi The Capstone syllabus (see here for compliance spreadsheet): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1bFB8PdbJW-PlG4Ercf9f8a47XE6BP_YptVF6xjcP9yo/edit#gid=0) - is missing some information, please let me know if you'd like me to provide by feedback to Sangeeta/Stern Best, Jesse |

@Jesse Stayton and @Titilayo Weech met to discuss feedback. Feedback was added to the incorrect document and should be transferred over. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VzVjd_KMwmQt8tF_Jcr4vCqw5yk8JdDb/edit JS will share the new feedback with Sangeeta |
02/02/2024 |
JS reaches out to Sangeeta to provide feedback: Hi Sangeeta, I hope you've been well! I am writing with an update on the BS Business proposal. Thank you for adding language to the rationale on the capstone change that we want to capture, in addition to the real estate concentration. Please see attached for the NYSED change form - you will see I have made some edits to the structure of the narrative for your review and approval, as well as language re: relation to existing programs. In addition: please add an implementation plan in the narrative section as well, i.e. the semester when Stern plans on launching the program. Lastly, the Capstone syllabus submitted (see attached) appears to be in draft form, as some of the information is missing - please send a final version for our review. Please let me know if you have any questions - thanks for your patience! |

TW reaches out to Stern with an additional request re: relationship to existing programs: Dear Colleagues, I have a follow-up request for this proposed concentration. As you indicate in your proposal, SPS offers a BS in Real Estate: NYU also offers a (20792) BS in Real Estate, but there is essentially no meaningful overlap between this program and programs at Stern. Students from outside of Stern cannot complete the BS in Business degree program, although our courses are open to them, and our students cannot take SPS courses to fulfill their degree requirements. Since there are similarities to an existing program, we recommend you contact SPS to discuss your proposed program. Please let me know the result of your discussion with SPS. If you need a contact, I would recommend reaching out to Mary Killilea, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Innovation. If you have any questions about this request, please do not hesitate to contact me. |
02/06/2024 |
TW reaches out: Dear Colleagues, I haven't heard a response to this request yet. Can you please confirm receipt? |
02/06/2024 |
Sangeeta responds: Hi Titilayo, Apologies and thank you for this email. We are meeting tomorrow. I believe there was communication between the UC and SPS in the past on this topic, but I want to confirm with Robert. I will circle back. Thank you. |
02/08/2024 |
TW reaches out for a status update: Hi Sangeeta, I'm following up since you indicated you had a meeting yesterday, and would get back to me soon. |
02/09/2024 |
Sangeeta responds to TW: Dear Titilayo, I apologize for not getting back to you sooner, I was trying to pull together the correct documents and timeline of events. I discussed with Robert and he reminded me that the Real Estate proposal was presented at the NYU Undergraduate Program Committee (UPC) meeting in October 2022. SPS leadership attends those meetings. And the proposal was approved ultimately. Prior to that meeting, a memo of intent (October 2, 2022) was sent by Robert and Raghu to the NYU UPC. Please see here for the link to that memo. Additionally, Robert noted that he did meet Marc Norman of the Schack Institute when he started in the role at SPS. I hope the above helps answer your inquiry about any communication between Stern and SPS. Please let us know if you need us to do anything else with regard to that. Thank you for working with us and guiding us through these things. |

03/07/2024 |
TW submits to NYSED, JS writes to Stern: Hi Sangeeta, I am writing to let you know that this proposal has been submitted to NYSED. We will be in touch with any future updates. Thank you for your patience! Additionally: we have noted in the submission documents that the proposed changes will also apply to the BS Business/MS Accounting. However, since the BS component of the dual degree is not identical to the standalone BS, NYSED may request a full curricular breakdown for the dual degree. Please be prepared to submit this, if requested. |
