AF writes to JS: Hi Jesse, Regarding the BS in Music Business, I reviewed the provided documents and your review and touched base with Titilayo on Friday. It appears a mistake was made in your initial review. Steinhardt did not submit their NYSED form to us and, although you alluded to it in your review, you did not flag it for me or follow up with Steinhardt to submit. NOTE: Unless it is a very special, time sensitive case, like KAIST, we do not produce forms for schools or even review a proposal without all forms completed correctly. It is possible that this is just a submission mistake: Lindsay may have the right stuff, but this may have slipped through the cracks for her. It is also possible that, for whatever reason, she did not have eyes on this proposal. Please follow up with her ASAP to check. |

JS writes to TW: Hi Titilayo, I wanted to run the below draft to Lindsay by you re: the incomplete NYSED form for the BS Music Business proposal, per Alex's email yesterday: "Hi Lindsay, I hope you are well. I wanted to provide you with an update regarding the BS Music Business proposal submitted to OAPRA that is currently under review by me. When looking through the submission documents, I noticed that the NYSED Application to Register New Programs form (see attached) is incomplete: only the General Information section has been filled out. When you have a moment, would you be able to complete the form in its entirety so that I can review it? Thank you for your patience!" |
11/14/2023 |
TW responds: I'd modify this to let her know you reviewed all of the other documents and will prioritize reviewing the form once you receive the missing document. It should be clear in your message to Lindsay that although we made a mistake in not catching this sooner, it will not prevent us from getting back to her quickly. Please make any necessary modifications to make that clear. |

JS revises language: "Hi Lindsay, I hope you are well. I apologize for not reaching out sooner - all other submitted documents have been reviewed, and I will prioritize reviewing the NYSED form once I receive it and will then be able to provide feedback. Thank you |

TW provides additional feedback: it's helpful to break down your emails instead of sending paragraphs. Separate paragraphs by topic or based on flow of information. Also, you want to speak in an active voice and remove additional language that does not make your message more clear. Please see my edits below and delete my notes in [brackets]: Hi Lindsay, I hope you are well. I am reaching out to request an outstanding item for the BS Music Business proposal that is currently under review by me. [What is your email about; and/or what do you want the receiver to do] When looking through the submission documents, I noticed that the NYSED Application to Register New Programs form (see attached) is incomplete [the form is incomplete is the basis of your outreach]: only the General Information section has been filled out. When you have a moment, please send me the completed form so that I can review it. [what you need her to do, send you a completed form] I apologize for not reaching out sooner - all other submitted documents have been reviewed, and I will prioritize reviewing the NYSED form once I receive it and will then be able to provide feedback. [this is a good addition] Thank you [should be separate to highlight importance] |

JS sends approved email to Lindsay Wright, Lindsay responds: We have submitted a separate faculty table, curriculum list, course descriptions list, and sequence of study. I'm happy to fill out page 6, if that is what you're referring to? |
11/15/2023 |
Lindsay sends follow up email: Please see attached the updated NYSED form with page 6 completed. Please let me know if you need anything else. |
12/06/2023 |
JS reaches out to AF: Hi Alex, I hope you are well! I am writing to update you that Lindsay has re-sent the NYSED form, now with page 6 completed - please see here for the folder, the document in question in title "(UPDATED 11.14) NYSED Application to Register New Grad_UG Programs November 2023." Please note that the other items that were not originally included in the NYSED form - the faculty tables, sample schedule, curriculum list - were submitted as separate documents. If you have review notes for me aside from this omission, could you please provide them so I can reach out to Lindsay? |

JS sends revised review to TW based on Steinhardt's new documents: Hi Titilayo, I have completed my review of the BS Music Business proposal from Steinhardt, given the revised documents sent by Steinhardt that were originally missing - please see here for the folder, as well as below for some notes as a draft to Steinhardt: NYSED Application for a New Program: As stated in the proposal, the requirements for this new degree “overlap intentionally” with the existing BM Music business, with the main distinction being differing distributions in liberal arts and specialized courses. Please provide a side-by-side with the BM to highlight the differences for NYSED. (Note for Titilayo: This appears to be similar to existing programs at NYU that have two “pathways” to a single course of study: the BA and BS in Physics, for example. I am wondering if it would be beneficial from a compliance perspective to include a side-by-side of the existing BM along with the proposed BS to highlight the differences/similarities for NYSED: we want to ensure the proposed BS is not overly duplicative. Program Targets: please confirm the basis/data for the provided projections Curriculum and Courses: please confirm no courses are new to NYU There is missing language around implementation dates for this proposal: please add In the proposal rationale document, there is language around what differentiates the proposed BS Music Business from the existing (and similar) BM in Music Business: should this be added to the NYSED proposal document? Program Schedule: Missing from this table: columns for LAS courses and major requirements, please add Please confirm that no courses have prerequisites Culminating experience: please include more information on “Entrepreneurship” course Faculty Table: Terminal Degrees: as several faculty list masters-level degrees as the final degree achieved, please confirm the terminal degree for this field Missing from table: percentage of time dedicated to the program There do no appear to be faculty listed for all courses that are required for this program: please confirm there is adequate coverage Faculty to be hired: please confirm that there is sufficient faculty in place if this position is not ultimately hired Syllabi: Per the compliance spreadsheet, there are some issues on these: should we need to submit syllabi to NYSED, there will need to be revised - especially around credit integrity |

per meeting between TW and JS, JS to provide feedback on proposal. Aside from a few minor clarification questions (see rationale/narrative document), the main point of feedback will be instructing Steinhardt to complete the proper Faculty Table and Undergraduate Program Schedule, JS to provide guidance on forms for future submissions |

JS provides feedback to Lindsay: Hi Lindsay, I am writing to provide OAPRA’s feedback on the BS Music Business proposal - thanks so much for your patience while we’ve reviewed this. Overall, it is in good shape - we appreciate the hard work you’ve put into this! I am attaching the narrative document, which you will see has a few in-line comments/questions to be addressed before submission. In addition, the Faculty Table included in the submission appears to be the table for program changes as opposed to the required table for new programs. The correct table can be found in the NYSED application on pages 14-15 (see attached), which requests additional information i.e. the percentage of time faculty will dedicate to the program. Likewise, the sample schedule provided is the Graduate Program Schedule, as opposed to the required Undergraduate Program Schedule. Please complete the correct table on page 10 of the NYSED application. This table includes additional information, i.e. indicating LAS courses, major requirements, etc. Please also be sure to indicate any prerequisite courses. Finally, although there are no courses new to NYU included in this program, there is also the chance that NYSED will request syllabi. The syllabi submitted were missing some information, most notably language on credit integrity. Please review OAPRA’s syllabi tip sheet, as well as NYU’s guidance on credit hours, should NYSED submission be requested. Please let me know if you have any questions. |
