Dianne Sefo sends updated NYSED application and tables, as well as an updated course curriculum document for the dental science concentration. Dianne also notes: "When we started this process, the required credits for our History/Arts/Culture requirements were at 8 credits. We have since reduced this to 6 and increased our DH Electives requirements to 9 credits. We want to make sure this is the same in the new dental science concentration." |

JS provides AF with the following feedback based on revised documents sent by Dentistry: Addressing all changes in the NYSED form: there is now an updated narrative reflecting the other changes being made since last registration, other than the addition of the dental science concentration: Liberal Arts, Required Core, Professional, and Elective Requirement Changes. One course listed - DHYG3-UD162 Research Methods - is tagged as “modified” but it is not stated what the modification is. Please confirm. Addressing program requirements for all student tracks: there is now a side by side that includes program requirements for both the new dental science concentration, as well as the “standard” dental hygiene program. Undergraduate Program Schedule: As with the side by side, dentistry has now provided two separate schedules for both the dental science concentration as well as the standard dental hygiene program. Undergraduate Program Requirements Form: all of the courses that complete pre req requirements for admission to Dental School that are part of the new Dental Sciences concentration – Chem, Bio, Physics – are listed as “new.” Please confirm these are new for this concentration and not totally new courses. Syllabi: I have completed the review: there are syllabi compliance issues. Also - Dentistry mentions that anatomy labs are only new courses, however: the undergrad program requirements form lists other courses as “new” as well, please confirm/advise. If indeed the only two truly new courses are the Anatomy lab courses, then we are in pretty good shape – those two syllabi are largely compliant. It appears that, for the most part, Dentistry has done a solid job of incorporating the changes we requested. I’m still working on a reconciliation between the documents, i.e. course names, making sure the math makes sense etc |

JS compiles final documents and sends PDF to AF for submission |
07/14/2023 |
JS and AF meet to discuss final documents - OAPRA to engage Dentistry for approvals on revisions to side-by-side completed by AF, to request clarification on LAS credits for one of the sample schedules (47 vs. 63), and appropriate syllabi assessment. JS drafts guidance/creates template for narrative section in NYSED form, in order to more clearly demonstration rationale behind proposed changes (i.e. LAS and NatSci changes, major core changes, etc.) - AF to review. |
07/17/2023 |
JS revises and sends AF updated template/guidance for dentistry based on feedback, assesses syllabi |
07/19/2023 |
07/19/2023: AF requests from JS most recent BS Dental Hygiene documents, JS sends the following: NYSED Form Side-by-Side (version AF updated) Undergrad Program Reqs form Sample Schedules (DH standard + Dental Science concentration) |
07/19/2023 |
AF requests syllabi review from JS for the following courses: Required Core (syllabi provided): ● DHYG3-UD150 Advanced Allied Dental Education (previously elective course) ● DHYG3-UD156 Advanced Clinical Dental Hygiene Teaching (previously elective course) ● HUMN1-UC6401 Critical Thinking ● NURSE-UN80 Statistics ● DHYG3-UD162 Research Methods ● DHYG3-UD155 Cultural Competence ● DHYG3-UD172 Internship II ● DHYG3-UD173 Leadership Development Natural Science—Dental Science Concentration (syllabi provided): ● DHYG1-UD114.002 Anatomy and Physiology I Lab ● DHYG1-UD 120.002 Anatomy and Physiology II Lab |
07/19/2023 |
JS completes review and sends AF the following notes: Required Core (syllabi provided): ● DHYG3-UD150 Advanced Allied Dental Education (previously elective course): not included in proposal. ● DHYG3-UD156 Advanced Clinical Dental Hygiene Teaching (previously elective course): credit integrity: there is a number of hours given for lecture and clinic, however the “total course hours” is left blank. Course objectives, Method of Assessment Student Achievement, and Bibliography are also missing. ● HUMN1-UC6401 Critical Thinking: missing credit integrity and total number of credits. ● NURSE-UN80 Statistics: missing credit integrity, number of credits, and prerequisites. ● DHYG3-UD162 Research Methods: missing course objectives (there is a competency table, but there are formatting issues that make it difficult to read) and bibliography format for required materials. ● DHYG3-UD155 Cultural Competence: missing prerequisites and required materials in a bibliography format, otherwise a strong syllabus that is largely compliant. ● DHYG3-UD172 Internship II: not included in proposal. ● DHYG3-UD173 Leadership Development: missing course objectives (there is a competencies table, but it is blank) and bibliography format for required materials. Natural Science—Dental Science Concentration (syllabi provided): ● DHYG1-UD114.002 Anatomy and Physiology I Lab: this is a strong syllabus that contains almost all compliance requirements, the “required materials'' is just not in a bibliography format. Also: no prerequisites listed, only “co-requisite.” The formatting for the Course Description is a bit messy: it’s off center and in a different font from the rest of the syllabus. ● DHYG1-UD 120.002 Anatomy and Physiology II Lab: this is a strong syllabus that contains almost all compliance requirements, the “required materials'' is just not in a bibliography format. |

AF reaches out to Dianne Sefo, providing the following edits to be made by Dentistry before NYSED submission: NYSED Program Change Form: Please review the attached revised program change form. I have consolidated some of the information to stress the continuities between the two tracks (confirming that they should be considered a single program). There are also a few places where brief additional explanations are needed. Side-by-side: I have rearranged the order in service of presenting this best as a single program with two tracks. I made a few tweaks to requirement categories in order to align with NYSED terminology. This is all explained in the comments. Program Schedule Tables: these look fine except for the differences in LAS credits listed. The dental science concentration meets LAS requirements but the standard does not (60 credits for a BS). Please let me know whether you need guidance on how to recategorize things. Course descriptions: could we provide course descriptions for the following indicating which courses are Dentistry and which are CAS. Please also indicate that all are existing courses at the university. Required Core: ● DHYG3-UD150 Advanced Allied Dental Education ● DHYG3-UD156 Advanced Clinical Dental Hygiene Teaching ● HUMN1-UC6401 Critical Thinking: ● NURSE-UN80 Statistics ● DHYG3-UD162 Research Methods ● DHYG3-UD155 Cultural Competence ● DHYG3-UD172 Internship II: not included in proposal. ● DHYG3-UD173 Leadership Development Required Core—Dental Science Concentration (courses already offered at New York University College of Arts and Science, course descriptions provided): PHYS-UA11General Physics I PHYS-UA12 General Physics II CHEM-UA125 General Chemistry I and lab MATH-UA121 Calculus I CHEM-UA126 General Chemistry II and lab CHEM-UA225 Organic Chemistry I and lab Chem-UA226 Organic Chemistry II and lab |

NYSED (Paul Sheehan) reaches out to OAPRA with the following question: The proposal indicates that “New York University College of Arts and Sciences have offered their support for 10 additional students per year in these required courses” of the new dental science concentration. Do you anticipate only 10 students per year in the new dental science concentration? Will there be a limit on the number of students in this concentration? |
09/15/2023 |
AF alerts Dentistry to NYSED feedback, Dianne Sefo responds: We are planning to limit it to 10 students for now. If we see an interest for more, we plan to hire faculty in the department to offer these courses ourselves before allowing an increase in enrollment. It would be a good problem to have. |
09/15/2023 |
AF responds to Paul, confirming NYU will limit the number of students in the dental science concentration to 10 at this time. We do not anticipate having a demand greater than 10 students |
