Email from Catherine: "The FNP program director is stepping down and an interim director is starting in September. Because things are in flux, I don't really know when we'll be able to move forward with this. Hopefully I can meet with the interim director and Kim soon and see what's going on. |

TW submits final proposal to NYSED |
05/19/2023 |
Jeanne-Marie Havener of NYSED reaches out to TW and Kimberly Glassman, sends notification that the proposal suggests two license qualifying Nursing programs-one for the traditional post-secondary student and one that is offered for the accelerated second degree baccalaureate student, proposes the following: (1) separate the two programs adding a separate ASDBS-Nursing program as it has a different curriculum and different admission criteria and should be separately registered and have a separate NCLEX-RN code; (2) remove the accelerated format from the standard/traditional program (complete the face page for the substantive change proposal, provide a rationale as outlined, a copy of the curriculum and the admission criteria). |
05/19/2023 |
Kimberly Glassman reaches out to TW in response to NYSED inquiry, indicates that two NCLEX codes are and issue and will explore getting rid of the ADBS code, as they are registered together with NYSED. The nursing component of the curriculum is exactly the same for both. |
05/22/2023 |
TW responds, recommends a prompt response to NYSED with the following: 1. provide Jeanne-Marie with a response that makes it clear that accelerated and traditional pathways are just pathways of a singular nursing program, 2) provide a few sentences that detail the curriculum is the same, with the exception of credits that are transferred in for accelerated students versus traditional students, 3) the response will also need to speak to the admissions requirements as well, and why it makes sense for a single registered program. |
05/31/2023 |
JS and AF meet with Kimberly Glassman and Catherine Falzone of Nursing to discuss the issue and next steps. OAPRA advises that there appears to be confusion on NYSED's part re: the accelerated component. Nursing and OAPRA agree that the program is more of an advaced standing situation vs. accelerated programming, and students are essentially treated like transfer students. NYSED should be made clear that curricular requirements and admissions are the same for standard vs. accelerated students. AF to draft response to NYSED clarifying this confirming both sets of students progress through the program in the same way - advanced students are just able to waive several requirements. OAPRA will not address NCLEX codes issues - Nursing will handle this. |

AF responds to NYSED (Jeanne-Marie Havener) to offer clarification on pathways question for this proposal: NYU only offers one BS Nursing program with two different points of entry: one for students who enter at the beginning of their undergraduate programs and one for students who transfer into the major/program having already completed another bachelors degree. There are no different admissions requirements nor substantive differences in the curriculum requirements between the two entry pathways. Students transferring in (identified as "accelerated" in the proposal) who have completed comparable requirements to the traditional program in a previous bachelors degree, may apply this previous coursework toward their program completion within the parameters of NYU Nursing transfer policies. |

AF reaches out to Jeanne-Marie requesting a status update on proposal review |
08/03/2023 |
NYSED responds, indicating that the accelerated second degree programs in NYS are supposed to be separately registered as Nursing-ASDBS rather than Nursing as they are meant exclusively for a separate demographic and are considered post-baccalaureate degrees. This is important, internally, for NYSED tracking purposes and should be helpful for NYU as well. To complete this action NYSED needs to understand a few things: Format-accelerated (length of the program in months) and is it standard; day, eve, eve-weekend; FT or Not FT Admission Standards/ Enrollments- provide the admission criteria; indicate how it is ascertained that graduates/admits meet the LAS/gen ed requirements (because all baccalaureate degrees are not the same) How faculty needs are met-i.e., makes effective use of the FT undergraduate Nursing faculty Provide a Curriculum Plan with credit allocations, clinical/lab hours NYSED also notes that the program links to a number of other graduate degree programs and it is possible, with a copy of the curricular plans for the ASDBS students in these programs, get these dual degree/multi-award programs registered at the same time. Then NYSED will do a separate registration action for the new multi-award FNP programs. |
08/03/2023 |
AF receives a second note from NYSED: "Thank you. I was going to look at this today as I think that in order to do as was requested in the proposal that we need to separately register the traditional/post-secondary program and the post-baccalaureate accelerated program-in the eyes of SED these are two different types of programs-even if the curriculum is the same. I can work with you to do this…it took just a few days when I did this with another school." |

AF informs Kim Glassman of NYSED's response. Kim responds: Nursing will comply internally with NYSED's request and will reach out to OAPRA when complete. AF responds: there is a concern on the administrative side: Will this cause problems for nursing to have two program codes? It may mean on the university registrars side that we have two separate entries. AF to check with registrar. AF requests timeline from Kim for returning requested documentation to NYSED Kim responds: "It's not an issue for us, in that we will not change the way we teach. It's the same faculty since we combine ABS w the traditional 4-year students, once they hit the nursing sequences. And we will just leave the 2 NCLEX codes, since we will have the 2 "programs". I need to communicate this internally, and the UG Associate Dean is away, and then I'm away 8/10-21. I think we can reasonably do this within 3-4 weeks? I assume we filing "new program" documents for the accelerated program? The dual degree would be then taking that "new" accelerated program" and adding it to each of the relevant master's programs." AF responds: We will not be filling out "new program" documents, only what Jeanne Marie asked for: What is the program format: accelerated (length of the program in months) is it standard; day, eve, eve-weekend; FT or Not FT Admission Standards/ Enrollments- provide the admission criteria; indicate how it is ascertained that graduates/admits meet the LAS/gen ed requirements (because all baccalaureate degrees are not the same) How faculty needs are met-i.e., makes effective use of the FT undergraduate Nursing faculty Provide a Curriculum Plan with credit allocations, clinical/lab hours I think the first three we can answer in a short narrative format and just describe. The last point we can use a table of some kind--I think you may have the best sense of how to present this. Does this change your sense of the timeline? Let me know if you need any assistance with understanding the format definitions or any of the other criteria. Kim responds: Nursing will work on this internally and reach out to AF on 08/07 with an update |
08/10/2023 |
AF reaches out to NYSED, indicating that NYU is collecting remaining final information and will in touch week of 08/14/2023 |
08/10/2023 |
Jeanne-Marie responds, confirming receipt and noting she will be out of town but will check emails periodically. |
08/10/2023 |
AF reaches out to Kim Glassman, indicating that the Accelerated Bachelor’s of Science with a Concentration in Nursing document is strong, but suggests adding LAS designations (not the program requirements category, but the course type that must be a minimum of 60 credits for BS by NYS regs) to the curricular tables. AF recommends aligning with the submission that was made to NYSED. Kim responds, asking for clarification on LAS definition - AF provides. AF notes that we can move forward with Jeanne Marie with the docs Nursing has already provided at this time, but AF recommends making the adjustments since LAS designations are particularly important for UG registrations. Kim confirms receipt, will ask Sarah Irvin to work on this. |
08/10/2023 |
AF reaches out to Kim, informing her of additional request from NYSED: to also process all corresponding dual degrees. AF requests program requirements for these dual degree programs. Kim responds, confirming Nursing will complete this task as well. |
08/15/2023 |
Sarah Irvin reaches out to AF, providing updated curricular doc for accelerated degree, along with all dual degrees. |
08/17/2023 |
per AF's request, JS drafts email response to NYSED, including required docs created by Nursing, as well as a summary of what has been completed. AF sends to NYSED, and informs Nursing of submission. |
