I hope you had a wonderful week! The proposal for curriculum changes to the Master of Science (M.S.) degree program in Computer Science at New York University has been reviewed. Please see the outstanding items below that require a response.
General electives in concentrations:
-
Both proposed concentrations require 15 points of general electives and the proposal states that the elective courses “will be designated by the department for students each term.” Please provide a sample list of courses that students can currently choose from that will meet the 15-point requirement for general electives in both concentrations. For any new courses, please provide the syllabus and faculty information.
-
Both proposed concentrations require 3 capstone points and the proposal states that the "Capstone project courses are selected from a set of project oriented courses made available by the department each term.” Please provide a sample list of courses that students can currently choose from that will meet the 3-point capstone requirement in both concentrations. For any new courses, please provide the syllabus and faculty information.

As a reminder, the program is currently registered as full-time (FT). However, the sample program schedules submitted appear to not be full-time. For New York State student financial aid programs (not federal), Section 145-2.1 of Commissioner’s Regulations defines “full-time” study as enrollment of at least 12 credits per semester with equivalences made for thesis research, etc. Please submit revised sample program schedules outlining how students could move through the program meeting the State definition of full-time. If the students do not complete at least 12 credits (or the equivalent) each semester, the “Not Full-Time” (N-FT) format will be included in the program’s listing in the Inventory of Registered Programs (IRP) when the proposed changes to the M.S. program is registered. In addition, the IRP will be updated to reflect the program’s ineligibility for TAP and APTS financial aid.
Multiple award/multiple institution program (M/A/I):
Programs with the same program title, degree award, and HEGIS code:
-
It appears that 07834 (MS Computer Science), 07833 (PhD Computer Science), and 30823 (M/A/I: MS Computer Science -NYU/MS Library Science-LIU) were all registered to NYU-Main (SED Inst. ID 453000). It appears that 85149 (MS Computer Science), 85150 (PhD Computer Science), and 22536 (M/A/I: BA Computer Science-Manhattanville College/MS Computer Science-NYU) were all originally registered to Polytechnic Institute of NYU (SED Inst. ID 458000), which was a branch campus of NYU-Main (SED Inst. ID 453000). Please clarify whether both versions of the MS and PhD programs are currently active.
-
If any are to be discontinued, please provide a to-be-terminated (TBT) date. If two programs with the same title are to remain active, the Department requests that the titles of each be adjusted to provide distinction between the programs on the IRP. Please confirm whether a placeholder program will need to be created/reflected in the IRP to retain the current title for students currently registered in the program. NOTE: If a placeholder is needed, please provide a TBT date for the current title.
We ask that you provide the requested information within 30 business days (by November 2, 2020). The response should be submitted to me by email. Note that the response date is flexible, due to the current pandemic situation. Please do not hesitate to reach out if additional time will be needed.
If we find that the issue has not been adequately addressed, we will ask you to withdraw the proposal. A proposal that is withdrawn can be resubmitted later but must show evidence that the required changes have been made and follows part 52.1 (l) of the Commissioner's Regulations.
